Argos Sweep West Georgia to Start Second Half of Conference Play

Corisha Smith totals 15.5 points in the victory

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida hit a conference-best .567 in its clean sweep over West Georgia on Friday night, improving the Argonauts' record to 16-6 overall and 10-1 in Gulf South Conference play. The team was led by Corisha Smith, who had 11 kills while hitting .643 and recording a season-high four service aces.

The team's .567 mark in the match bested the .512 that North Alabama hit against Union in late-September and is the third-highest attacking percentage in a single match in program history. The total stands just behind matches against Union from the 2012 and 2015 seasons, during which UWF hit .600 and .579, respectively.

UWF's three errors in the match were a season-best, and West Florida also tallied a season-high 10 aces. Four came from Smith, while Jordyn Poppen and Monique StCyr each added two and Kourtney Pittaway and Tori Martella chipped in with one apiece.

The West Florida defense stepped up on Friday as well, holding UWG to just a .101 attack percentage. The game marked the eighth time this year that UWF has held an opponent to a hitting percentage lower than .110.

Going 9-for-12 with no errors, senior middle blocker Kathryn Torre posted her highest hitting percentage of the season and the second-best of her career, at .750. Pittaway added six kills with a .462 hitting percentage, Rachel Neblett totaled five kills at .571, and Emily Cosgrove hit a career-best .800 with four kills on five attempts.

Things stayed even between the two teams in the first set until the 10-10 mark, when West Florida stepped into the driver's seat and went on an 11-0 run. The Argonaut would finish the set up 25-13, holding UWG to just seven kills and forcing six Wolves errors. West Georgia hit just .031 in the set.

The second set belonged to Smith, as the senior tallied four kills in five tries and scored two aces on the serve. UWF totaled five aces in the second frame and hit an unreal .706, with 12 kills and no errors in 17 tries, and took down UWG with ease, 25-9.

West Georgia played UWF tightly in the final set, and the Argonauts ultimately took it 25-19. Cosgrove got the start in the final frame and went 4-for-5, tying Smith's four kills in the set.

West Florida will be back at it tomorrow with matches against West Alabama and Spring Hill, beginning at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. in the Field House. UWA and Spring Hill will gear up for a 6 p.m. neutral-site match in between the two UWF matches.
