PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida volleyball team made the most of its homecoming weekend by sweeping West Alabama and Spring Hill on Saturday afternoon.
UWF has now won 11 consecutive sets, which is the squad's longest streak since winning 17 consecutive sets towards the end of last season.
West Florida is now 18-6 on the year and owns an 11-1 GSC record.
West Florida will head to Mississippi College on Tuesday, before seeing action next weekend at Lee and Shorter.
West Florida 3, West Alabama 0
West Florida extended its winning streak when playing West Alabama to 16 matches after a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-23) victory in the opening end of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Argos already held a healthy 18-10 lead in the first set, but utilized pair of kills each from
Rachel Neblett and
Kourtney Pittaway during a 5-0 run to put the first set out of reach at 23-10. The Argonauts would go on to win the first set, 25-12.
Things were a bit tighter in the second set, as UWF held a two-point advantage at 17-15.
Corisha Smith posted back-to-back kills to add some insurance, before a pair of attack errors by UWA put the score at 21-15. The Argonauts closed the second set on a 4-0 run and won the game 25-17.
With a slim 20-19 lead in the third set, West Florida notched kills from
Cora Bidlack and
Katy Kuhlmeier to extend its lead to 22-19. UWA would fight back but with the score at 24-23 in UWF's favor,
Kathryn Torre recorded her sixth kill of the match to finish the contest.
Monique StCyr posted an impressive 34 assists in the match to set up the offense. StCyr also contributed 11 digs, while
Tori Martella led all players in the match with 12.
Smith posted a .476 attack percentage with 12 kills and only two attack errors. Bidlack recorded a new season-high with 11 kills on just 20 attempts.
As a team, UWF hit .347 while holding the Tigers to a .133 attack percentage. The Argos held UWA to a match-low .000 success rate in the first set.
West Florida 3, Spring Hill 0
The Argos continued its offensive success against Spring Hill in the nightcap by sweeping the Badgers and recording its third consecutive 3-0 victory.
Rachel Neblett posted a perfect night, converting on all eight of her attack attempts on the night.
Katy Kuhlmeier led all players in the match with 11 kills, while
Tori Martella led the way with 14 digs and
Monique StCyr posted a match-high 23 assists to quarterback the offense to a .358 attack percentage.
To jump ahead 1-0, UWF used a 7-1 run to close a first set, 25-11 victory. Neblett posted a pair of kills in the late run to end the first set.
UWF used an early run in the second set to coast to a 2-0 lead. UWF lead by as much as 14 in the set as the Argonauts were cruising with a 21-7 lead before the Badgers took nine of the next 13 points and the Argonauts closed the set with a 25-16 win.
Spring Hill had its brightest moment in the beginning of the third set when jumping to a 5-0 lead. After UWF called a timeout, the Argonauts responded by rallying off seven unanswered points to reclaim a lead it held for the remainder of the set. The Argos eventually went on to take the third set by a score of 25-18.
