BOX SCORE
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Gavin Gillies and
Kameron Bethell each posted a goal within the final four minutes to erase West Alabama's 2-0 lead and allow for the University of West Florida men's soccer team to earn a point against the two-time defending Gulf South Conference Champions on Sunday afternoon at the UWF Soccer Complex.
West Alabama (9-5-1, 5-2-1 GSC) took a 1-0 lead into half with a 34
th minute goal. West Alabama seemed to have the game locked down in the 83
rd minute when it added an insurance goal. However just under four minutes later,
Shawn Sanon provided a cross into the box that allowed
Isaiah Lopez to get a shot off, but with UWA goalkeeper Brad Louis making the save, Gillies was able to corral the rebounded ball and put it into the back of the net to make things interesting in the late stages of the match.
After UWF (6-5-2, 5-1-2 GSC) drew a foul inside the box with only 28 seconds remaining, Bethell was called upon to take the penalty kick and converted to push the game into overtime.
The teams battled for 20 minutes over the course of two overtime periods, but the game would eventually end in a 2-2 tie. UWF outshot UWA 4-2 in overtime.
UWF has now extended its unbeaten streak to five games, its longest streak since opening last season with five-straight wins.
Phil D'Amico recorded two saves in the second overtime period and three in the match to preserve the tie.
Elsewhere in GSC action, Mississippi College secured the top spot in the conference with a 0-0 tie against Shorter. UWF remains in a tie for second place with Shorter at 5-1-2 in GSC play. The Hawks conclude GSC play with Lee on Friday.
The Argonauts will Auburn-Montgomery on Thursday and Spring Hill on Saturday to conclude the regular season.
