CLINTON, Miss. – A seven-game winning streak came to a close for the University of West Florida women's soccer team on Thursday afternoon, falling to Mississippi College 1-0. The Argonauts still stand atop the Gulf South Conference with a 10-1 record and 30 points in league play, heading into the final game of the regular season.
UWF got off 12 shots and put five on target, but MC was able to find the net. Mississippi College's Lauren Kate Carter struck with her third goal of the year in the game's 70th minute, putting the Choctaws up 1-0. That would prove to be the game-winner, as West Florida was held to just one shot after the Choctaws put a tally on the board.
It was the first goal that UWF has allowed in conference play all season. Only six teams in GSC history have allowed one or fewer goals in a full conference season, and UWF has accomplished the feat twice.
West Florida's consecutive shutout streak – which was seven games – and stretch of 723 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal also came to an end. The shutout streak was the third-longest in Division II and ranks as the fourth-longest in GSC history, while the scoreless minutes streak is the sixth-longest in conference history.
UWF holds a tiebreaker over Lee, which plays on Thursday night. The Argonauts took a 1-0 win over the Lady Flames in Cleveland on October 9. If UWF wins, or if both West Florida and Lee have the same outcome in Saturday's game, UWF would clinch home-field advantage in the Gulf South Conference Tournament, which begins on Tuesday.
West Florida visits Delta State on Saturday at 11 a.m. for the final game of the regular season.
