Argos Fall in Penalty Kicks in GSC Tournament Final

Marteinn Urbancic scored game-tying goal in 71st minute

BOX SCORE

CLINTON, Miss. – 110 minutes of soccer could not determine the 2016 Gulf South Conference Championship, and the University of West Florida men's soccer team fell in penalty kicks, 6-5, to the now three-time defending GSC Champions, West Alabama. The contest will officially be scored as a tie, and UWF finishes the season at 10-5-3.

West Florida trailed 1-0 until Marteinn Urbancic registered his fifth goal of the season after receiving an Allan Kuhne throw-in in the 71st minute.

UWF looked to have the early advantage in penalty kicks, as Urbancic converted on his attempt and West Alabama followed with a miss from Jean-Baptiste Meyniel when facing UWF's penalty-kick goalkeeper Austin Zelnik. UWA's AJ Williams converted in the sixth round of the penalty kick to secure West Alabama's championship title.

Phil D'Amico registered seven saves in the effort.

West Alabama outshot the Argonauts 20-13, including a 5-1 edge in 20 minutes of overtime.

Urbancic, Daniel Smith and Chandler Castleman were named to the 2016 GSC All-Tournament Team.

West Florida ends its season on a 10-game unbeaten streak. It stands as the longest unbeaten streak for the Argonauts since an 18-game winning streak occurred in 2007.
