JACKSON, Tenn. – The UWF women's basketball team suffered through a second-consecutive poor-shooting night but unlike the previous contest, wasn't able to overcome that in dropping a 74-66 decision on the road at No. 22 Union Thursday night.
Â
Courtney Meyer and
Katie Bobos led UWF (6-2, 1-1 Gulf South Conference) at both ends of the floor for much of the contest, combining for 31 points, four assists and five blocks. Meyer led the team with season-highs of 16 points, five blocks and three assists. Bobos etched her name in the school record book by becoming just the tenth player in program history to surpass the 1,000-point mark, finishing with 15 on Thursday – her third-straight game with as many points.
Â
Despite the off shooting night, the Argos made 18-of-21 at the free throw line and had 17 second-chance points on 17 offensive rebounds as four players scored in double figures. UWF also had a plus-14 rebound margin.
Â
Union (6-2, 2-1) came into the game second in the country in field goal percentage at 50 percent and was held to a just 37 percent. The Lady Bulldogs made 9-of-25 from outside and were nearly perfect at the line, connecting on 21-of-22.
Â
UWF struggled to find a rhythm early, missing its first four shots while falling behind 8-2. The Argos made just 3-of-15 shots in the opening quarter but still remained within striking distance, trailing just 18-14. Union extended its lead to six points twice in the second quarter but the teams went scoreless for a stretch of 4:20 before UWF closed the half on a 10-7 run that ended when
Alex Coyne beat the buzzer with a half-court shot.
Â
In the third, after trading baskets for the opening minutes, the Argonauts went on a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 43-41 at the midway point in the quarter. But the Lady Bulldogs answered with a 10-4 run to close the frame with a 55-52 lead. Union got the margin to 63-54 early in the fourth to create a margin UWF was unable to overcome. The Argos got to within four twice in the final minute but couldn't stop the home squad at the free throw line. Union made its final 20 free throws and all 16 in the second half.
Â
UWF will travel west to Memphis where it will face Christian Brothers on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
