PENSACOLA, Fla. – Courtney Meyer posted her fourth double double in the last four games with a career-high 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the University of West Florida women's basketball team to a 68-58 Gulf South Conference victory over Christian Brothers on Thursday evening.
West Florida (15-7, 13-5 GSC) was ahead by just two points with 5:59 remaining in regulation after a successful CBU three pointer made it a 55-53 contest. Meyer received a pass Katie Bobos and converted on a jumper to build UWF's lead to 57-53 with 5:06 remaining. Toni Brewer was successful on an and-one opportunity with 3:28 remaining to help build a 62-54 lead for the Argonauts before another Meyer basket built UWF's lead to 10. CBU (9-13, 7-11 GSC) and UWF would go back and forth for the remainder of the game before UWF was able to seal a 10-point victory.
With the win, UWF is one of four teams with a 13-5 GSC mark, creating a four-way tie for second place in the conference. With the current tie breaker, UWF stands in line as the No. 2 seed over the other 13-5 teams which include Delta State, Shorter and Lee.
In addition to Meyer's career night, Bobos scored 12 points while posting game-highs in rebounds, with 15, and assists, with seven for her seventh double double of the season. Brewer shot 62.5% (5-8) on the night, scoring 12 points for her 15th double digit scoring performance of the season.
The Christian Brothers offense featured three double digit scorers with Ashley Schaefer leading the Lady Bucs with 17 points.
The Argonauts dominated in the paint, outscoring CBU 30-12 from close range. UWF shot 45.6% (26-57) in comparison to Christian Brothers' 35.8% (19-53), while the UWF defense held CBU to a 29% success rate on shots in the first half.
UWF now looks towards a pivotal GSC contest against No. 9/11 Union, who sits first in the conference with a 16-2 mark and has won 11 straight. Tipoff for the UWF-Union contest is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., with the UWF-Union men's game following the conclusion of the women's game.Saturday's double header will be UWF basketball's annual Cancer Awareness Pink Game where the first 200 fans will receive a pink UWF t-shirt.
