Katie O'Neal was dialed in from outside with four 3-point field goals to lead four players in double figures as West Florida defeated West Alabama, 64-60, at Pruitt Hall on Saturday.
UWF (16-9, 14-7 Gulf South) snapped a 2-game losing skid and picked up its eighth road win of the year. The Argos stand in fifth place in the league standings, a game out of a 3-way tie for second with one game remaining in the regular-season.
Brewer also had eight rebounds, a block and a steal. O'Neal, who made her first career start, finished with 14 points – a game after going for a career-high 18 with six triples.
Katie Bobos added 11 and
Courtney Meyer grabbed a game-high nine boards and 10 points.
UWF shot 39 percent and outscored UWA 34-22 in the paint.
After a rough opening 4:30 in which the Argos missed their first six shots and committed three turnovers, they found themselves down 9-2, and 11-4 a minute later. UWF then got 6-consecutive points from Juanish Young to make it a 1-point deficit. After a pair of UWA jumpers, the Argos took over the remainder of the period, fashioning an 11-2 run over the final 2:10 for a 21-18 lead.
UWF extended the lead in the second quarter, pulling ahead 34-24 with 2:55 left on back-to-back 3-pointers from
Katie O'Neal and
Aneesa Watson. The Argos carried a 36-28 lead into the break, finishing the half at 40 percent shooting – 50 percent after the 0-for-6 start.
UWF had its lead in the third up to 10 point on two occasions before the Tigers clawed back and trimmed the margin to 46-40 w/ 4:40 to play.
Belle Bistrow found O'Neal on the wing for a three and Brewer made a pair of free throws to push the lead back to double digits at 51-40. UWA again came back with a 3-point play and a layup to make it a 6-point game, eventually beating the buzzer to stay within six at 55-49.
The Argos never let the Tigers get any closer than five during the fourth quarter before a bucket late in the game when it was already decided.
UWF will conclude the regular-season next Saturday when it plays host to Valdosta State. Tip-off at the UWF Field House is set for 2:00 p.m., with the men's game against the Blazers at 4:00 p.m.
