No. 4 UWF men's tennis defeats No. 13 CSU 6-3 on Saturday

West Florida earns win over nationally-ranked opponent to start the season

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 4-ranked University of West Florida men's tennis team opened up the season with a 6-3 victory on the road against the No. 13-ranked Columbus State Cougars on Saturday afternoon. West Florida (1-0, 0-0 GSC) took two of the three doubles matches and won four singles matches en route to the season-opening victory.
 
The No. 5-ranked doubles team of senior Kenny Brasil (Apucarana, Brazil) and junior Alex Peyrot (Castelnaudary, France) defeated Maciej Kierkus and Marco Almorin 8-4 at number one doubles. Brasil and Peyrot have now won eight consecutive doubles matches during spring competition dating back to April 1, 2015.
 
Senior Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) and sophomore Pedro Roese (Novo Hamburgo, Brazil) defeated KP Pannu and Zach Whaanga 8-2 at number two doubles.
 
Sophomore Sebastian Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia) and junior Pablo Tellez (Bogota, Columbia) fell to Benedikt Wilde and Jorge Vargas 3-8 at number three doubles.
 
No. 11 Peyrot defeated No. 48 Almorin 6-3, 6-4 at number one singles while No. 22 Brasil rebounded after a first-set loss to defeat No. 43 Vargas at number two singles by a score of 1-6, 6-1, 6-0. Brasil earned his 35th singles victory as an Argonaut on Saturday.
 
Boada came back to defeat Pannu at number three singles 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 while junior Douglas Boe (Vinhedo, Brazil) earned a victory against a regionally-ranked opponent with a 0-6, 6-3, 10-3 comeback at number six singles.
 
Sanchez fell to Kierkus at number four singles 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 while senior Pablo Borrero (Pereira, Colombia) fell to Whaanga 4-6, 2-6 at number five singles.
 
West Florida will next open up Gulf South Conference play with a trio of matches on the road in Alabama next weekend. UWF will face No. 38 West Alabama on Friday, February 12 at 1 p.m. CT before facing No. 36 North Alabama on Saturday, February 13 at 11 a.m. CT. The Argonauts will wrap up the weekend with a match against Alabama Huntsville on Sunday, February 14 at 1 p.m. CT.
