CLINTON, Miss. – The West Florida women's basketball team controlled the paint and rebounding battle, while limiting Mississippi College to 34 percent shooting in a 66-55 road win at A.E. Wood Coliseum Saturday.
Â
UWF (14-7, 12-5 Gulf South) jumped out to a sizeable lead in the opening quarter and kept the Lady Choctaws at bay the remainder of the game. UWF shot 46 percent in the game after an opening 10 minutes of 10-of-14 en route to a 27-16 lead.
UWF outrebounded MC 51-20 and outscored the home team 36-22 in the paint.
Â
For the second-consecutive game, sophomore
Toni Brewer led four Argos in double figures as she finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Junior
Katie Bobos matched Brewer's team-high six double-doubles with 14 points, 12 boards and three assists.
Â
"We talked about creating offense from our defense and did a great job of capitalizing on the opportunities that Mississippi College gave us," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "That was our focus. We needed to beat them on the boards to stay in the game. I was especially proud that we held them without an offensive rebound in the first half."
Â
Junior
Alex Coyne and sophomore
Courtney Meyer were also in double figures for the Argonauts. Coyne had 12 points and dished out eight assists, pushing her season total to 146 which moves her into third place on the UWF single-season chart.
Â
Meyer recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 and 11. She also altered three shots, bringing her season total to 43 which moved her into ninth place on the school's top-10 list.
Â
MC (5-15, 3-14) was led by senior Kristen Sampson who scored 12 points and senior Khandijah Jones who came off the bench to add a career-high 10.
Â
UWF made five of its first eight shots and claimed a 14-2 lead in the first period. The Lady Choctaws closed to within five in the second before the Argonauts closed the half on a 11-4 run for a 38-28 lead.
Â
The Argos led by as many as 16 three times after the intermission and never by less than eight.
Â
The Argos remain tied for fourth in the league standings but are just a game out of second. UWF will play three of its final five regular-season contests at home, beginning Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Christian Brothers (9-12, 7-10) and league leader No. 11 Union (21-2, 15-2) on Saturday.
