GAME 1 BOXGAME 2 BOX GULF SHORES, Ala. – The West Florida softball team finished up the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores with wins against Simon Fraser and Miles on Sunday. The Argonauts were led by several players offensively, as eight different players had an RBI and nine scored a run between the two games.
Kalyn Chapman stood out against Miles, as she struck out a career-high 12 batters and walked just one while allowing four hits in five innings.
Becca Taylor went nine innings in the win over Simon Fraser and held the Clan to just three earned runs.
Game 1: UWF 7, Simon Fraser 6 (10 innings)Both teams were held scoreless through two, but
Meghan Toney started a two-out rally in the third to give UWF a 1-0 lead. Toney began with a single,
Jacey Castro drew a walk and
Kathleen Smiley laced a single into center to bring Toney in.
UWF kept at it in the fourth, starting with a
Jessica Wilkinson walk and a
Chelsy Krantz single into left field.
Caitlin Steel's grounder to second brought in Wilkinson, and a chopper to third from
Rachel Wright allowed Krantz to score.
SFU struck for two more runs in the top of the sixth to even the score with three hits in the inning, and West Florida was held scoreless in the seventh. Smiley singled in the seventh to start a rally, but it was ultimately cut short.
With tiebreaker rules in effect, each team began every extra inning with a runner on second. SFU scored in the eighth after sacrificing its 3 hitter, and right fielder Rachel Procter struck a single into right field.
Kayla Rosario did the damage for UWF in the eighth, hitting a single toward the shortstop that brought in
Rhiannon Sassman. The ninth inning showed a similar story, as SFU scored after laying down a sacrifice bunt. Following a
Meghan Toney bunt that advanced
Rachel Wright to third, Wright was brought in by
Jacey Castro's second single of the day to tie things at five.
After SFU scored once in the 10th,
Chelsy Krantz came up with an opportunity to tie it again, and laced a single into left-center field.
Caitlin Steel followed, grounding into a fielder's choice and stealing second on the first pitch to
Rachel Wright. Wright ended the game with a sharp single up the middle that Steel scored on.
Pitchers
Becca Taylor and
Sarah Maloney combined to allow just eight hits in 10 innings of work, with Taylor going the first nine and walking just two batters. For her efforts, Maloney improved her record to 2-0 on the season.
Game 2: UWF 10, Miles 2Chapman struck out five consecutive Miles batters and seven out of eight from the first to the third inning. After allowing two runs in the third, she started another streak and sat down five consecutive Miles batters again, this time in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
West Florida started the offensive onslaught in the third inning, starting off down 2-0. Freshman
Rachel Wright started a run of five straight singles by UWF batters, and each of those hitters, including Toney, Castro, Smiley and Sassman, came in to score in the inning. Wright recorded four hits in four trips, while Castro recorded a three-hit game.
Sara Spears singled twice and scored in the first start of her career, while Krantz reached twice and scored both times. Wright came in to score the walkoff run in the fifth, her third run scored of the game, when Wilkinson reached on an error. Toney drove in two runs when she singled in the third and brought in Krantz and Wright.
UWF visits Miles on Thursday in Fairfield, Alabama, for a double-header set to begin at 3 p.m. The Argos will then travel to Cleveland, Tennessee, for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
