PENSACOLA, Fla. – Sophomore second baseman
Meghan Toney reached base a total of seven times in the University of West Florida's doubleheader split with conference rival West Georgia on Saturday. The Argonauts' record now stands at 9-8 in Gulf South Conference play with a 22-11 overall record and a 9-2 mark at home.
After reaching in each game of the doubleheader,
Emily Pettigrew extended her on-base streak to 17 games. It is the longest such streak for a UWF player since Amber Ingram reached in 20 straight in 2012.
In Game 2,
Kalyn Chapman and
Kathleen Smiley each recorded their sixth multi-RBI games of the season, which ties them with
Jacey Castro for a team-high.
GAME 1: West Georgia 7, West Florida 1UWF got ahead early, as
Meghan Toney came around to score without the Argos recording a hit in the first. Toney was hit by a pitch from UWG pitcher Kathryn Woody and stole second soon after.
Rhiannon Sassman followed with a ground ball to the right side that moved the runner to third, and Toney scored on a wild pitch with
Kathleen Smiley at the plate.
Strong team defense saved West Florida a run in the bottom of the second. After a leadoff double from Jordan Corbin and a sacrifice bunt to move Corbin over, Sierra Stella's slow ground ball to first provided an opportunity for Smiley. With Stella on the move and Corbin hesitating at third, Smiley threw a bullet to home and
Caitlin Steel applied a tag just as Corbin slid in for the second out of the inning. Toney capped the inning off with a diving stop on a grounder to her left and made the throw to first in plenty of time for the final out.
Trouble struck for the Argonauts in the third, when UWG scored four times. After striking out the first two batters of the inning,
Becca Taylor allowed three consecutive singles followed by a two-run home run to Corbin to put up UWG 4-1. The Wolves scored in the fifth as well, with Randi Phillips coming home on a sacrifice fly from Summer Wallace.
West Florida threatened in the fifth, as
Chelsy Krantz and
Caitlin Steel led off the inning with back-to-back singles. UWG was able to slow the threat by throwing Krantz out at third on a bunt from
Emily Pettigrew and then retiring Pettigrew at second when Toney reached on a fielder's choice.
West Georgia scored a run in the sixth and in the seventh to stretch the lead to 7-1.
Toney finished the game reaching a team-best four times, with a walk, a hit by pitch and two fielder's choices.
Caitlin Steel reached two of her three times at the plate, singling in the fifth and drawing her first walk of the year in the seventh.
GAME 2: West Florida 6, West Georgia 2Kalyn Chapman struck out the side and drove in two runs in the first inning to put UWF up quickly. With Pettigrew and Toney at second and third after drawing walks and advancing on a wild pitch, Chapman ripped a single past a diving third baseman and brought in Pettigrew.
While Toney initially stayed at third, Chapman took a wide turn around first and drew a throw from West Georgia shortstop Randi Phillips, which gave Toney the opening to catch UWG sleeping and come around for a second run.
West Georgia put a runner in scoring position with one away in the fourth, with Sierra Stella at the plate. Steel made the throw down to second in an effort to catch Jordan Corbin too far off base, and Corbin made the move to third. After receiving the throw at second, Toney made a perfect throw to Sassman at third, and the tag was applied for the second out. Chapman struck out Stella two pitches later to exit the inning with no harm done.
Chelsy Krantz led off the fifth with a single, and advanced to second with a sacrifice bunt from Steel. After Pettigrew drew a walk, three consecutive Argonauts singled, including Smiley who extended UWF's lead to 4-0 with a sharp one-hopper back up the middle. Sassman brought in another run with a bases-loaded fielder's choice, and
Jessica Wilkinson lifted a single into right field to stretch the lead to 6-0.
With bases loaded and no outs for UWG in the seventh, Chapman struck out pinch-hitter Molly Uhrman and forced a flyout from Marley Stowers. The final out was recorded with a ground ball to Rosario at short, after two runs came across on a walk and a single for the Wolves.
Chapman finished the day with seven strikeouts over seven innings and allowed just four hits, and she improved her record to 8-5 for the season.
The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
