MEMPHIS, Tenn. –
Emily Pettigrew,
Rhiannon Sassman and
Rachel Wright each reached base five times in the University of West Florida softball team's sweep of Christian Brothers on Friday afternoon. UWF improved to 25-11 on the year with a 12-8 Gulf South Conference record.
Kalyn Chapman picked up her 10th win of the season in Game 1, joining
Becca Taylor as one of just seven pitchers in the Gulf South Conference to hit the milestone. Chapman and Taylor are the first UWF duo to each win 10 games in a season since 2010, when Jillian Lafrance and Ashleigh Allgood won 15 and 17 games, respectively.
Emily Pettigrew had hits in each game of the doubleheader, stretching her on-base streak to 20 games and matching Amber Ingram's on-base streak from 2012.
GAME 1: West Florida 11, Christian Brothers 4A four-run first inning got UWF started on the right foot in Game 1 against CBU.
Meghan Toney got the action going with a one-out double, and
Kalyn Chapman then drew a two-out walk to put two on for
Rhiannon Sassman. The freshman's team-high ninth double of the year brought in the first of her three RBIs in the game.
Jessica Wilkinson followed with her own double, bringing in Chapman and Sassman, and
Rachel Wright capped off the inning with an RBI single to put UWF up 4-0.
Chapman went the distance in the circle for the ninth time this year and picked up her 10th win. Across seven innings of work, Chapman struck out seven and allowed three earned runs. She has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 15 of her 20 appearances in circle this season.
UWF went scoreless until the fifth, when Wright doubled to let Sassman circle the bases a second time. Game 1 marked Wright's third multi-RBI game of the year and Sassman's sixth, tying her for a team-high.
Emily Pettigrew's one-out single in the sixth started the rally in the six-run inning, as she ultimately came around on a single from Toney after advancing to second on a passed ball. After the single, Toney moved to second on a wild pitch,
Kathleen Smiley walked and the pair was brought in with a single from Sassman.
Wilkinson drew a walk and Wright was hit by a pitch to load the bases for
Chelsy Krantz, who put pressure on the defense with a bunt. The misplay from the Lady Bucs allowed two more runs to come across and put the score at 10-4. Wright came around on an error from the third baseman, which wrapped up scoring for the game.
Five Argos picked up two or more hits in the game, including Toney and Sassman, who each did so for the 10th time this year.
GAME 2: West Florida 2, Christian Brothers 1 (8 innings)In a game with little scoring,
Sarah Maloney got the start in Game 2 and did not disappoint. After allowing a leadoff single, she retired seven batters in a row and held the Lady Bucs scoreless for 5 2/3 innings. The second half of the doubleheader marked Maloney's third career complete game
Both teams were shut out for the first five innings, and UWF took the first run of the game in the sixth.
Kayla Rosario doubled, following
Rachel Wright's eighth double of the year to bring Wright in to score. Rosario, Wright, Pettigrew and Sassman each finished the game with multiple hits. It was the second such game for Rosario, the ninth for Wright, Pettigrew's eighth and the 11th for Sassman.
CBU tied it up in the bottom half of the sixth, with a single up the middle from Maddi Welch that brought in Alexis Seward. Welch was thrown out at second on the play to end the inning and leave things tied at one.
UWF threatened again in the top of the seventh but could not bring any runs across. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Steel ripped a single into center field and stole second on the next pitch with Pettigrew at the plate. Pettigrew singled the game-winner into center field for her third hit of the game, bringing in Steel and giving UWF the lead at 2-1.
