March 30, 2016 BOX SCORE: PDF | HTML PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida baseball team rides its longest winning streak since the 2014 season after extending its winning streak to seven games after a 5-4 victory after 11 innings against the University of Montevallo Falcons on Wednesday afternoon.
UWF now has an eight-game winning streak when playing the Falcons, dating all the way back to the 2009 season.
Winning in walk off fashion at Jim Spooner Field on Wednesdays has become a norm in the 2016 season, as the team has won in its last at bat on a Wednesday for the third time this season.
With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 11th,
Robert Lopez was able to score after
Jimmy Redovian was hit by a pitch on a 1-2 offering, allowing the score to be tied at 4-4. The next very next batter in
Kyle Hamner grounded one back to the pitcher, which allowed for a force out at home plate. Montevallo catcher Jacob Whiting then threw down to first base to finish a double play, but airmailed the throw over first basemen Taylor Walker, which allowed
Nic Strasser to score the game-winning run from second base. With the win, UWF improves to 6-2 in midweek contests and lengthens its current winning streak to seven games.
West Florida (21-11) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after
Ben Emery recorded an RBI single in the second and
Jimmy Redovian scored in the third inning.
In the top of the sixth, the Falcons were threatening UWF's one-run lead, having runners on first and second with no out.
Jarrod Petree was called upon to get UWF out of the jam and did so in dominating fashion, as he was able to retire the next three Falcons batters while striking out a pair of them. Petree has now inherited 12 batters in his 2016 campaign, and has left them all stranded as he continues his smooth transition to the Argonaut bullpen.
Montevallo (18-16) was able to send the Argonauts into extra innings for the sixth time this season, as the Falcons erased UWF's 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the ninth. The Falcons put themselves in position to win the contest in the top of the 11
th, scoring a go-ahead run and taking a 4-3 lead before UWF was able to respond with two runs in the home half of the inning.
Freshman lefty
Troy Brown made his fourth start of the season and impressed once again, throwing five solid innings allowing just one earned run on two base hits. Brown now has a team-best 1.12 ERA as a starter while having a 2.70 ERA over 23.1 innings pitched this year.
Petree threw two innings of Tuesday's contest and did not allow a base runner and struck out three. After his performance, the redshirt junior now has a 0.99 ERA on the season.
Cole Crowder earned his second win of the season after striking out the only batter he faced to finish the top half of the 11
th inning.
Justin Ambrosino and
Robert Lopez led the team with two hits each, as Ambrosino posted his third consecutive multi-hit performance and is 8-for-14 in his last three games. Lopez recorded two hits on two hard-hit balls to left field, including a double in the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the third, Hamner extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a single through the right side of the infield. Hamner now has tied Peter Antoske's 2005 hitting streak for the fourth longest in program history.
The Argonauts jump back into Gulf South Conference action this weekend, as the squad heads to Jackson, Tennessee for a three-game series with Union. Saturday's doubleheader with the Bulldogs is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
