UWF Sweeps West Alabama, Stretches Winning Streak to 12

Argos in sole possession of third place in conference standings

PENSACOLA, Fla. Kalyn Chapman and Becca Taylor combined to allow just three hits and strike out seven in a 3-0 win over West Alabama to sweep the Tigers at the UWF Softball Complex on Sunday. West Florida is now 33-11 on the season with a 19-8 mark in the Gulf South Conference, good for third in the GSC with just six conference games remaining in the regular season.

UWF has won 12 consecutive games, dating back to the second half of a Saturday doubleheader against West Georgia on March 19. West Florida has hit .392 with a .521 slugging percentage in those 12 games, while stealing 30 bases in 32 tries and drawing 41 walks with only 27 strikeouts. The Argonauts have outscored the opposition 105-23, posting a 1.68 ERA.

The sweep was UWF's fifth in conference play this year, and they Argonauts have won seven three-game sets this season.

Chapman retired the first eight batters she faced in the game, with three strikeouts and three groundouts through the first 2 2/3 innings. After allowing the Tigers' first hit with two outs in the third, Chapman finished her day by sitting down seven of the last nine batters she saw.

UWF's first run of the day came in the third inning on a double from Rhiannon Sassman, who finished the weekend with team bests in runs scored (4), extra-base hits (3), total bases (9), RBIs (6) and slugging (1.286). The freshman from Orlando has the most RBIs (44) for a UWF player since Shannon Miles drove in 64 in the 2010 campaign.

Sassman brought in Emily Pettigrew, who extended her on-base streak to 28 games. With their hits in the third inning, Pettigrew and Sassman each extended their hitting streaks to 11 games, which are the longest such streaks for an Argonaut player this year.

Pettigrew also added an RBI in the fourth inning, putting the score at 2-0. The Argos were put into great position when Jessica Wilkinson reached on an error to open the inning and Kayla Rosario pinch-ran for her. Rosario advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Chelsy Krantz and then stole third with Caitlin Steel at the plate. Steel drew a walk and stole second to put two on for Pettigrew with one away. Rosario scored when Pettigrew chopped a grounder to short.

Sassman walked to lead off the fifth and Kathleen Smiley drove a single into right center field to advance Sassman to third. With two on and one out, Rachel Wright ripped a line drive to the left of UWA shortstop Lacey Santiago. Santiago made the grab for the second out, but the throw she made toward first to pick off Chapman went wide of the base and allowed Sassman to score, giving UWF the 3-0 lead it finished with.

Chapman finished the day with just two hits allowed over five innings and five strikeouts, while Taylor picked up her first save of the season with two shutout innings in the sixth and seventh. UWF pitching combined to allow just one run on the weekend, good for a 0.39 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 18 innings. UWA hit just .145 for the series with no extra-base hits.

UWF will play a midweek doubleheader against Stillman on Wednesday at the UWF Softball Complex before visiting Delta State over the weekend. First pitch for the doubleheader will be at 4 p.m.
