PENSACOLA, Fla. – Brandon Nagem hurled 8.2 innings against a talented University of West Georgia lineup, but the University of West Florida lineup was unable to provide run support as the Wolves defeated the top-seeded Argonauts, 3-1. With its second tournament loss, West Florida is eliminated from the 2016 Gulf South Conference Tournament.
UWF and UWG would both be held scoreless until the top of the fifth, where UWG catcher Payton Mann hit an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Tyler Hutch for a 1-0 Wolves lead.
West Florida finally broke through against West Georgia starter Josh Morgan in the seventh, as
Robert Lopez hit an RBI double over the outstretched glove of leftfielder Garrett Hayes to score
Kyle Hamner.
That would be all the offense the Argonauts would put together in the contest, as UWG arms held the Argo lineup to just five hits in the contest. UWG starting pitcher Josh Morgan had a span of 10-straight Argonauts retired, while relief pitcher T.J. Watson allowed only one base runner in two innings of work.
West Georgia added the game-deciding run and an insurance run in the ninth, as Keith Buckhault hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Hutch hit an RBI single to right center in the very next at bat to provide the Wolves with a 3-1 lead.
A tough-luck loser,
Brandon Nagem suffered his third loss of the season despite throwing a team season-high 8.2 innings with a season-high eight strikeouts, one walk, and just one earned run allowed on six hits. The southpaw recorded four strikeouts within his first three innings pitched and retired 11 UWG batters in a row during a span from the end of the fifth inning to the beginning of the ninth inning. The senior flashed some leather as well; snagging a hard line drive hit right at him by Drew Eady then throwing on to first to double up Garrett Hayes in the second inning. Later in the fourth inning, Nagem made a full-extension diving catch on a popped up bunt by Hayes.
Kyle Hamner had the lone multiple-hit performance for the Argonauts, gong 2-for-4. Lopez's double was the only extra-base hit for UWF.
After going 1-2 in the tournament, UWF lost back-to-back games for the first time since March 16-19 when the Argos suffered a three-game skid nearly two months ago.
Being ranked No. 2 in the latest South Region rankings, UWF will likely see a spot in the 2016 NCAA South Regional. The Division II baseball selection show will air on NCAA.com on Monday night at 9:00 p.m. CT and the South Regional will take place at the highest seed's location from May 19 – 23. The Argos are looking to reach its fifth regional tournament in the last seven years.
