PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida volleyball team begins its 2016 season tomorrow at 11:30am against Findlay at the UWF Field House. West Florida will play four games over the weekend against strong competition as part of the 2016 Hampton Inn-vitational.
2016 HAMPTON INN-VITATIONAL
West Florida will host the Hampton Inn-vitational at the UWF Field House for the second consecutive year beginning Sep. 2... This year's tournament features UWF, Findlay, Central Missouri, Carson-Newman, and defending NCAA Division II National Champions Wheeling Jesuit... The five teams combined for an eye-popping 152-33 record in 2016... UWF is 28-15 all-time when hosting a season-opening tournament, and the squad went 3-1 in last year's tournament with the lone loss coming against a No. 3-ranked Southwest Minnesota State club.
GSC DOMINANCE
Since
Melissa Wolter took over the UWF volleyball program prior to the 2003 season, West Florida has been nearly unstoppable in GSC play, owning a 151-21 record... Last year the Argonauts went 19-1 in GSC action, including a 10-0 mark at home... UWF heads into the 2016 with a 51-match winning streak during regular season home games against conference opponents... The last loss for UWF in a GSC regular season home game came against North Alabama on October 24, 2009... UWF won six consecutive GSC Championships from 2008-2013... UWF currently owns the longest active streak of 20-win seasons in the GSC, which currently stands at 12 (not including 2004 season shortened by Hurricane Ivan)... Valdosta State and North Alabama are tied for the second longest active streak of 20-win seasons in the GSC at three... UWF has reached 10-consecutive NCAA South Regional Tournaments.
SIX FRESHMEN ON 2016 ROSTER
UWF welcomes a large 2016 freshmen class this season, as the roster lists six freshmen - the most that Wolter has featured on a roster since the 2013 team had eight freshmen... The Argonauts welcome
Sarah Hayman (League City, Texas), Pheobe Hozeska (Burlington, Wis.),
Courtney Markes (Austin, Texas), Caliegh Morrison (Jacksonville, Florida),
Jordyn Poppen (Aurora, Ill.) and
Kelly Trenz (St. Louis, Mo.).
RETURNING AWARD WINNERS
West Florida's six All-GSC selections in 2015 was the most among GSC teams, and UWF will return five of those six honorees for 2016... Middle blocker
Kathryn Torre, who became the 11th player in program history to earn AVCA All-American honors last year, is set to return for her senior season... Torre also earned AVCA All-South Region First Team honors in 2015, becoming the 10th player in program history to earn that acheivement...
Monique StCyr earned D2CCA All-South Region Second Team honors in 2015 in addition to being a All-GSC First Team selection... Senior libero
Tori Martella was also featured on the 2015 All-GSC First Team...
Corisha Smith,
Cora Bidlack and Torre were all named All-GSC Second Team Members... Bidlack became the 11th player in UWF history to earn All-GSC honors twice and looks to become just the fifth player to earn All-GSC honors three times.
HISTORY IN ELECTION YEARS
In the four years the Argonauts have played during a United States presidential election, the Argonauts have posted a 67-43 record, which includes a 2008 and 2012 GSC Championship... When a member of the Democratic Party has went on to win the election, the team owns an impressive 57-16 record, while when a member of the Republican Party wins the election, the squad is just 10-27.
HISTORY IN OLYMPIC YEARS
UWF is 155-86 in years the Olympic Games are being held... UWF has never played a season where a city in South America has held the games... The most successful contident for UWF has been Asia, as the Argos have a 55-16 record and a GSC Champinonship between two seasons (2008 Beijing and 2014 Sochi).

Heading into her senior season,
Tori Martella is within striking distance of the program's all-time digs record, needing 459 to set a new school mark... Martella posted a new program record with 572 digs in the 2015 season.
