PENSACOLA, Fla. – Seniors
Sara Helgadottir and
Kaley Ward added their third goals of the season and freshmen
Leonie Kreil and
Camille King scored the first of their careers in West Florida's 4-0 win over Union on Friday night. The game was the first in Gulf South Conference play for each team in the 2016 campaign. UWF now has an all-time record of 135-14-3 in GSC competition, which is 50 more wins than the next-closest team.
West Florida outshot Union 25-6 in the win, with nine shots on goal compared to the Lady Bulldogs' five.
Katelyn Burkhart got her second consecutive start in goal, recorded three saves and shut out Union for the first 80 minutes of the game before freshman
Elizabeth Bankhead jumped in goal and wrapped things up for UWF's second shutout of the season.
Ward started the scoring for the Argonauts in the 27th minute after getting a pass from freshman
Marjorie Boilesen along the right sideline around West Florida's attacking third. Ward then made a run past a defender and ripped a line drive past Union keeper Kristen Francis to net her third goal in as many games.
The senior from Saint Cloud, Florida, had a similar stretch early in the year last season. Ward scored in four consecutive games, including a hat trick at then-No. 1 Rollins.
Kreil continued the scoring onslaught just before the first half came to a close, lifting a shot from seven yards outside the box and getting by a diving Francis in goal.
UWF wasted little time at the beginning of the second half, as
Sara Helgadottir put on a high, floating shot from 20 yards out that found the upper 90 and stretched the lead to 3-0.
The final goal came from the freshman King, just four minutes after she came onto the pitch. The Land O' Lakes, Florida, native found herself in front of the net and took the opportunity to score on a ball from Boilesen. The assist was Boilesen's GSC-leading fourth of the season, and she has now scored a point via goal or assist in every game this season, having tallied an assist in each of the last four games.
Boilesen led all players with seven shots on the day, Ward had four and
Savanna Soares added three of her own.
West Florida hosts Christian Brothers on Sunday afternoon, with a scheduled start at 3 p.m. Links for live stats and a live video broadcast can be found at GoArgos.com.
