Kourtney Pittaway finished with six. Junior
Monique StCyr handed out 29 assists to go along with four kills and three aces – including two that keyed a 7-0 run early in the second set – from her setter position.
"We wanted to attack (West Georgia) from behind the end line," UWF head coach
Melissa Wolter said. "I think we came out of the gate really aggressive and that led to a strong performance offensively and defensively. Our block is pretty consistent and it's meant to make hitters think twice about taking big swings against our defense."
UWF opened the match with three-consecutive points to set the tone. The teams played even over the next 10 points as the Argos held an 8-5 lead. UWF doubled its margin with a 6-2 run that gave it a 14-7 edge to force a UWG timeout. From there, the teams played a number of side outs before UWF closed the set with an 8-3 run.
In the second set, UWG led 4-3 when UWF grabbed control with a stretch of seven-consecutive points, spotlighted with a kill and pair of aces from StCyr and two kills from Mattmuller. The Argos held the Wolves to just -.030 hitting in the frame.
The final set proved to be the closest of the match, with five ties in the first 22 points before the Argonauts were able to grab the final momentum shift. Trailing 11-10, UWF secured the lead for good with three-straight points and outscored UWG 15-6 the remainder of the set. After leading 7-5, the Wolves never scored consecutive points the rest of the match.
UWF will travel to West Alabama for a Saturday contest, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Livingston, Ala.
