Gavin Gillies and Daniel Smith record first career goals in setback

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of West Florida dropped a 4-2 contest against a high-powered University of Tampa team in its opening match of the 2016 season.

The Spartans (1-0) wasted no time in getting the scoring started as Fredinho Mompremier scored in the 7th minute to give UT a 1-0 lead. The Argos (0-1) responded quickly, as junior transfer Gavin Gillies scored a little over three minutes later for his first career goal as an Argonaut.

Tampa would tack on an additional goal in the 35th minute to head into the halftime break with a 2-1 lead. The Spartans would come out in the second half aggressively, scoring goals in the 52nd and 54th minutes. Mompremier's second goal of the game in the 52nd minute proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Junior defender Daniel Smith, who began his junior campaign on Friday, had not recorded a point in his career until he corralled a pass from Allan Kuhne in the 64th minute and put one past the keeper to cut UT's lead in half at 4-2.

The two teams would battle the remaining 26 minutes but the 4-2 score would hold for Tampa's season-opening win. UT outshot the Argonauts 17-6 for the contest, while Smith and Gillies led the Argos with two shots apiece.

Freshman Phil D'Amico corralled four saves during 61:15 of action in his collegiate debut. Austin Zelnik took over in the 62nd minute and recorded a save while holding the Spartans scoreless for the remainder of the game.

UWF now awaits its 2016 home opener, which is scheduled for Sunday at 11:00 a.m. against Missouri S&T.
