BOX SCORE

September 20, 2016

VALDOSTA, Ga.  – Behind the offensive presence of Corisha Smith and Monique StCyr, the No. 23-ranked University of West Florida volleyball team won its fifth straight match by besting Valdosta State in four sets (25-15, 30-32, 25-19, 25-14) to improve to 7-4 on the season with a 3-0 Gulf South Conference record.

In a back-and-forth beginning to the first set, UWF was able to record seven consecutive points to build a 13-6 lead.  Smith wasted no time in getting her banner night started, as the senior outside hitter recorded a set-high seven kills on 15 attempts for a .467 attack percentage.

UWF faced its toughest test in the second set, as the Argonauts owned a 23-21 advantage before Valdosta State posted back-to-back points to even it at 23-23. The Argos and Blazers would both have trouble finishing their opponent off, as the squads would battle until VSU was able to clinch the set victory, 32-30.

After UWF was able to collect a 4-3 lead in the third set, the Argos would not trail for the remainder of the set and went on to take a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 third set win. The set was tight-knit at 21-18 before kills from StCyr and Smith along with a Blazer attack error extended UWF's lead to a comfortable 24-18 margin.

The Argonauts and Blazers would once again battle closely in the fourth set, as UWF held an 8-7 advantage early on. West Florida would utilize an 8-1 run to take a 15-8 lead, and would go to convincingly win the set and clinch the match with a 25-14 fourth set victory.

West Florida outhit Valdosta State .298 to .176 for the match. UWF held Valdosta State to a match-low .050 attack percentage in the first set, while the Argos posted a match-best .432 attack percentage in the fourth set.

Smith, who posted a team season-high 21 kills on 41 attempts for a .439 attack percentage, led the offensive attack for the Argonauts in the match. Kathryn Torre also presented a strong offensive contribution with an eye-popping 17 kills on just 33 attempts for a .455 attack percentage. Holly Mattmuller posted a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs to lend a helping hand on both sides of the floor.

StCyr's 58 assists are the 11th most for a single match and the fifth most in a four-set match in program history. The total falls just one short of her career-high, which was accumulated against Valdosta State last season.

UWF looks to extend its 52-match home conference regular season winning streak this weekend against Lee and Shorter. UWF hosts the Flames Friday at 5:00 p.m., before hosting an undefeated Shorter club on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
