Argos Top Flames to Stay Perfect in GSC Action

UWF has won 53 consecutive regular season conference matches at home

PENSACOLA, Fla.  – The University of West Florida volleyball squad extended its winning streak to six matches and stayed perfect in Gulf South Conference play after defeating Lee University 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-11, 25-14) on Friday night.
 
The beginning of the first set was tight-knit between the Argos and Flames, as UWF held a 9-7 advantage in the early goings. UWF would utilize a 10-5 run to add a comfortable amount of insurance to its lead, and would go on to win the first set by a 25-17 margin.
 
West Florida faced a 17-14 deficit before taking a timeout in the second set, and would attempt to rally as the Argonauts brought the score to 21-20. After Lee posted back-to-back points to extend its lead to 23-20, UWF responded with back-to-back points of its won to bring the score to 23-22. Unfortunately for the Argonauts, Lee was able to utilize a Kathryn Torre attack error and a service ace by MaKayla Beebe to finish the set and win 25-22.
 
For the second straight match, UWF faced an even 1-1 score and responded by taking the next two sets in convincing fashion. West Florida dominated the third set, winning 25-11, before capturing the fourth set 25-14 to win its 53rd-consecutive regular season conference match at home.
 
West Florida out hit Lee .270 to .069 for the match. UWF's best set was on display in the fourth set, where UWF recorded 19 kills on 34 attempts with just two errors for a .500 attack percentage.
 
Katy Kuhlmeier and Kathryn Torre each posted double-digit point totals with 13 and 12, respectively. Monique StCyr's 43 assists led all players in the match, while Tori Martella's 21 digs also was a match-high.
 
Freshman Sarah Hayman posted three service aces in the match, which ties UWF's single-game season high. Torre posted a team-best five blocks against the Flames.
 
West Florida awaits a highly anticipated contest against an undefeated Shorter club, who enters tomorrow's action with an 11-0 overall and 6-0 GSC record. First serve between UWF and Shorter is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
