VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team took a 5-0 win at Valdosta State on Friday evening, improving the team's record to 5-2 overall and staying perfect in the Gulf South Conference. The team was led offensively by senior
Sara Helgadottir, who assisted on three goals and scored her own in the 63rd minute of the game to give the Argonauts their final goal.
Helgadottir's effort marked the sixth game in the senior's career with at least one goal and one assist. It is also the first game of her career with multiple assists, and her five total points in the game were the second-highest mark of her career, following a six-point hat trick in her 2013 freshman season.
With their performances in the game, Helgadottir and freshman
Marjorie Boilesen are now tied for the team lead with 12 points on the season, and senior
Kaley Ward leads the team with five goals.
The game was Ward's fifth in a row with a goal scored, and UWF is 4-1 in those games. The five-game goal streak is the longest of Ward's career, and her five-game point scored streak ties her longest such streak from last season. The last Argonaut to score a goal in five consecutive games was April Syme in the 2013 campaign, when she finished the year as UWF's leading goal-scorer.
Boilesen picked up her sixth assist of the year on Ward's goal, keeping alive her streak of scoring at least one point in every game of her career. Boilesen has also now assisted on a goal in six games in row. Both the point-scoring streak and the assist streak match Chelsea Palmer's 2013 streaks of the same kind. The next marker to look for in Boilesen's efforts will be Palmer's 2012 stretch during which she scored a point in 13 consecutive games.
Seniors
Alisa Festagallo,
Svenja Burkhardt and
Emily Vogler each scored in the win, as well. Vogler picked up her third goal of the season, giving her a career high, and it was the ninth of her career. The goals were the first of the season for both Festagallo and Burkhardt.
The West Florida back line showed off yet again, holding VSU to just four shots on the evening. West Florida outshot Valdosta State 18-4 with a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The game was UWF's third consecutive shutout and
Katelyn Burkhart's fourth win of the year in goal. The junior from Pace, Florida, picked up two saves in her spotless 82 minutes in goal, and she now holds a 0.27 GAA for the season.
West Florida continues the road trip and GSC play against West Georgia on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
