CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team and the Delta State University Statesmen went back-and-forth in a defensive battle for over 92 minutes, but UWF's
Gavin Gillies was able to put one past DSU goalkeeper Matthew Klinck in the 93
rd minute to secure the 1-0 victory for the Argonauts. The goal marks as Gillies' second of the year.
Gillies was set up by senior
Marteinn Urbancic, and Gillies was able to convert on a left-footed shot in the bottom right of the goal.
Phil D'Amico posted his second clean sheet of the year with four saves en route to UWF's 1-0 win. Defenders
Barrett Mills and
Japhet Bitsindou played all 92:49 of action and played integral parts in keeping DSU off the scoreboard.
UWF now stands at 2-4 on the year, which includes a 2-1 GSC record. DSU falls to 3-4 and is handed their first home loss of the season while sitting at 1-2 in the GSC.
West Florida outshot the Statesmen, 13-9. UWF also had advantages in corners at 8-6, while committing less fouls at 7-9.
UWF men's soccer is idle until next Saturday, October 1 at 12:30 p.m., when UWF hosts Saint Leo in a non-conference matchup.
