PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida volleyball team concluded a weekend with fierce competition on Saturday, and for the Argonauts the squad concludes the 2016 Hampton Inn-vitational with a 2-2 record. UWF swept Carson-Newman 3-0 in the early afternoon before the Argonauts dropped a 3-0 contest against defending NCAA Division II National Champions Wheeling Jesuit.
UWF 3, Carson-Newman 0
West Florida started off its second day of the Hampton Inn-vitational with a commanding 3-0 win of Carson-Newman, besting the Eagles 25-14, 25-15, 25-21. UWF improved to 2-1 on the season with the win, while C-N heads back to Tennessee with an 0-4 record after the tournament.
UWF opened the match with a statement, beginning the first set by taking a 12-4 lead. The second start started in similar fashion, with the Argonauts jumping out to a 13-5 advantage.
One of Carson-Newman's few bright spots in the match was in the beginning of the third set, where the Eagles jumped out to a 5-1 lead. West Florida was steady with its comeback attempt, and eventually overtook the lead in the third set after
Cora Bidlack tied the set at 11-11 with one of her five kills.
UWF's defense limited the Eagles tremendously throughout the entire match, as Carson-Newman was held to a .050 attack percentage for the match. The second set featured a match-low .034 for the Eagles.
No. 23-ranked West Florida on the other hand nearly quadrupled Carson-Newman's hitting percentage, as the Argos converted at a .235 success rate.
Individual standouts for UWF include
Kathryn Torre and
Corisha Smith, who each posted a match-high seven kills.
Holly Mattmuller added six kills on 16 attempts, and finished second on the team with seven digs Bidlack posted a match-best .364 attack percentage, while
Tori Martella posted 18 digs in the match.
Wheeling Jesuit 3, UWF 0
Wheeling Jesuit, who entered the tournament ranked No. 2 by the AVCA, showed its muscle early and often in front of packed house at the UWF Field House. The first set began with a tight-knit 14-13 score, however the Cardinals ended the set on a commanding 11-3 run to take the 1-0 advantage.
The second set also began in a back-and-forth battle, as Wheeling Jesuit jumped out to a 14-10 lead in the second set before UWF was able to knot the score at 14-14 with freshman
Sarah Hayman's first career service ace. WJU would go on to take the second set 25-20.
West Florida, who showed resilience in a 3-2 defeat against Central Missouri a night prior by erasing a 2-0 deficit, showed signs of pulling off something similar when jumping out to a 4-0 lead after back-to-back kills by
Monique StCyr. The third set would continue to be a battle, and the match would end with 19 tie scores and six lead changes.
UWF was held to a .113 attack percentage, while WJU converted at a .238 rate. Individual statistical leaders for the Argonauts include
Holly Mattmuller (eight kills),
Monique StCyr (23 assists) and
Tori Martella (16 digs).
West Florida led all five teams participating in the 2016 Hampton Inn-vitational with three All-Tournament selections.
Rachel Neblett,
Kathryn Torre and
Monique StCyr all received nods for their individual efforts in the first four matches of the season.
Torre led the Argonauts with 2.73 kills per set while also converting on her attack attempts at a .319 clip. Neblett finished second on the team with 27 total kills, while StCyr led UWF with seven assists per set.
UWF volleyball heads to the Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver, Colorado next weekend. The Argonauts will face Colorado Mines and Southwest Minnesota State on September 9, before playing an additional two games against opponents who are still to be determined on September 10.
