UWF Hits Road For West Alabama Thursday, Return Home For West Georgia Saturday

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF men's basketball team continues Gulf South Conference play this week, traveling to West Alabama for a Thursday night affair before returning home to host West Georgia on Saturday afternoon.
 
PASSING LAST SEASON
- UWF has recorded seven wins in each of its previous three seasons, but needed just 11 games to reach that total in 2016-17. West Florida has 16 games remaining on its regular-season schedule to get over the seven-win hump.
 
HOME COOKING
- West Florida owns a 3-2 record at the UWF Field House this season, and owns a +8.8 margin in those contests.
- West Florida is shooting 44.8% in home games, being led Deangelo Legrier who is converting at an eye-popping 70.3% at the UWF Field House.
 
LEGRIER NAMED GSC POTW
- Deangelo Legrier became UWF's first GSC Player of the Week since 2014-15, when Lendward Griffin earned the honor in the last week of the season.
- Legrier posted point totals of 21 and 26, respectively, in a pair of wins against North Alabama and Shorter.
- Legrier became the second UWF player to post back-to-back 20-point performances this season. Rashaan Benson had a stretch of three consecutive 20-point showings from 11/30-12/15. West Florida had three players post back-to-back 20-point games last season.
- Legrier was the definition of efficency last week, going 16-for-18 from the field for a 89 percent field goal percentage.
- On the boards, Legrier recorded a team-hihigh nine rebounds against Shorter after recording five against North Alabama.
- Legrier is now shooting 61.3 percent from the floor, and if that average were to hold for the rest of the year, would be the fifth best single-season percentage in school history.
- The last player to post a field goal percentage above 60% for a season was Anthony Russell, who set a new school record with a 67.3% connection rate in the 1997-98 season.
- Legrier's 52.1 career field goal percentage is the fourth best in program history.
- The Orlando native's honor is the first GSC weekly award of his career.

ON THE OFFENSIVE GLASS
- UWF is the GSC's best offensive rebounding team, averaging 15.17 offensive boards per game. That avergage is also eighth best in the nation.
- Deangelo Legrier is 25th in DII and second in the GSC with 3.58 offensive boards per game. Austin Somerfield (2.75 ORPG) and Darryl Tucker (2.67 ORPG) are sixth and seventh in the GSC.
- West Florida is the only team in the GSC with three players inside the top 20 for offensive rebounding.
 
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
- Rashaan Benson leads the league in both assists per game (5.1) and assist to turnover ratio (2.4). Benson's effort at the point has led the Argonauts to second place standings in the GSC in both assists per game (15.3) and assist to turnover ratio (1.17).
- West Florida owns a 2.8 turnover margin, good for second best in the league.  On the other side of the ball, UWF has forced 15.75 turnovers per game for the third most in the conference.
- West Florida is second in the GSC and 30th in Division II with 156 total turnovers.
 
OVERTIME WINNERS
- UWF earned its first overtime win of the season, erasing a 12-point second-half deficit against Shorter last Saturday.
- Deangelo Legrier set a new team single-game high with 26 points while posting a team-high nine rebounds.
- After setting a new season-high with a 53.4% field goal percentage against North Alabama, UWF followed that with a 50% shooting performance against the Hawks.
- West Florida limited the nation's leading scorer, Phil Taylor, to a season-worst 27.3% field goal percentage. Taylor remains the nation's leading scorer at 36 points per game, and had his second lowest total of the season against the Argonauts at 24 points.
- In overtime, UWF posted just one field goal but went 8-for-10 at the free-throw line to solidify the 93-89 win.
