PENSACOLA, Fla. –
Katie Bobos entered Saturday's UWF women's basketball contest with Delta State needing 18 rebounds to become the school's all-time leader in that category. After grabbing 13 by halftime and UWF easily controlling the game with a 16-point edge at that point, it didn't become an issue of if would happen, but when.
That question was answered late in the third when she tied her career high with 18 to break the mark of 798 set by Melissa Nafzger from 2003-06. The senior added one more for a new career high while scoring 16 points for her seventh double-double in the last eight games in helping UWF to a 87-51 victory.
The 20th-ranked Argonauts improved to 14-3 on the season and reached the midway point in the Gulf South Conference schedule in first place at 9-2.
In addition to Bobos, junior
Toni Brewer had a game-high 20 points to lead all players. Sophomore
Katie O'Neal was 3-of-4 from 3-point range to score 11 points and freshman
Imani Mulmore had 11 off the bench.
UWF shot 46 percent overall and had five 3-pointers to go along with a strong day at the free throw line, where it made 26-of-30. The Argos outrebounded the Lady Statesmen 45-23 and used 18 offensive boards to compile a 26-6 edge in second chance points.
UWF scored the opening five points and never trailed in the game. The Argos led 18-10 after the first quarter and stretched the margin to 25-12 with a 7-0 run early in the second.
The 36-point margin marked the third time this season UWF had won by at least 30 points and was the second-largest margin of defeat in Delta State program history.
Delta State (7-9, 4-7) shot 39 percent and committed 14 turnovers.
UWF will wrap-up its stretch of three games in five days on Monday when it travels to Valdosta State (10-7, 7-4) for a 6:00 p.m. Eastern time contest at The Complex.
