VALDOSTA, Ga. –
Alex Coyne had eight of her team-high 19 points in a crucial 10-0 run that saw 20th-ranked West Florida come from behind and pull out a 77-64 road win over Valdosta State at The Complex on Monday.
The win was the Argonauts' fifth-consecutive as they ended a stretch of three games in five days. UWF (15-3, 10-2 Gulf South) shot 43 percent in the game but was red-hot, 7-for-9 in the final 4:35.
Coyne's 19 points – which were one shy of her season-high – came on 6-of-11 shooting with a game-high three 3-pointers.
Katie Bobos had seven points in the final two minutes to finish with 13 and 12 rebounds, while
Toni Brewer added 12 and 14 to match Bobos with a double-double.
The Argos held a 45-39 rebounding edge and outscored the Lady Blazers 32-20 in the paint.
UWF struggled from the field in the early going, needing 5-of-6 free throws to secure an early 10-5 lead. The shots started falling as the Argonauts made six of their final seven to extend the lead to 22-11.
In the second quarter,
Shami Goodman had a bucket and Brewer got a layup and a pair of freebies to give UWF its largest lead of the game, 28-15 with 7:50 left in the half. The Lady Blazers trimmed the margin to five points before Coyne banked in a 35-footer as time expired in the half, putting the Argos up 39-31.
The Lady Blazers came out on fire in the third, scoring the first five points to make it a 39-36 contest with less than 40 seconds gone. But UWF responded with a 9-0 run, keyed by a pair of runout layups and seven points from Goodman that extended the advantage to 48-36 just 2:30 later. Valdosta continued to heat up and closed the quarter on an 8-1 run, trimming the UWF lead to 51-50.
Valdosta eventually tied the game at 55-55 with 7:22 to play. The teams then went cold for the next couple of minutes before the Lady Blazers grabbed the lead on a Sonya Franklin layup with 4:51 remaining.
That's when UWF made its final push. Coyne put the visitors ahead with a triple from the right wing, Meyer grabbed an offensive rebound for a put back and Coyne made another huge trey – this time from the left wing – to go up 63-57 in a span of 2:10. Coyne got another steal up top and had the uncontested layup to cap the run and put UWF ahead 65-57. From there, the Argos got two layups from Bobos and 6-of-7 free throws to secure the contest.
Valdosta State (10-8, 7-5) shot just 2-for-9 in the final five minutes to finish at 29 percent for the game. Kenya Smone' Dixon led the Lady Blazers with 14 points and eight rebounds.
UWF will return home for a Thursday night contest against West Alabama (6-12, 3-8). Tip-off at the UWF Field House is set for 5:30 p.m.
