PENSACOLA, Fla. – Katy Kuhlmeier enjoyed a season-best 11 kills to lead UWF volleyball (19-6, 9-0 GSC) to a straight set victory over Mississippi College (10-15, 2-7 GSC) Friday in the UWF Field House. Kuhlmeier hit .714, and the Argos hit .447 the match. Jordyn Poppen finished with nine kills.
The Argos jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the first. Rachel Neblett set the tone early with a block on the match's first point. Jordyn Poppen would lead the team with four kills in the first. Nadine Williams finished with three. UWF outhit the Choctaws .522 to -.083 in the first. The Argos ignited a furious 9-2 rally to close the set. Neblett closed the first set with a service ace.
Kuhlmeier broke the ice in the second with an early kill, but the Choctaws fought back to get out to their only lead of the match at 4-3. Neblett's second ace of the match helped the team back into the set. A kill by Neblett helped to break an 8-8 tie and start a 5-0 rally that saw UWF go up 13-8. The Choctaws clawed back to 15-14 before Monique StCyr led the Argos to a 3-0 run with 2 kills to lengthen the lead. UWF closed the set on a 7-2 run punctuated by a Kuhlmeier kill. Poppen piled up five more kills in the second.
The Argos enjoyed their largest margin of victory in a single-set this season with a 25-7 win in the finale. Kuhlmeier enjoyed an outstanding closing stanza with six kills. UWF hit .625 in the third set, registering 11 kills and just one error.
StCyr finished the match with a team-best 28 assists to accompany three kills. Poppen finished with nine kills and hit .421. Neblett hit .583 and finished with seven kills. Williams also finished with seven kills.
The Argos return to action tomorrow with the program's 11th annual "Pack It Pink" match. UWF squares off against West Alabama (14-9, 6-1 GSC) at 3:00 p.m. in the UWF Field House. In lieu of tickets, the UWF athletic department will be accepting donations Saturday going towards the Pensacola Breast Cancer Association. A silent auction will run in conjunction with the event and will feature several themed gift baskets, UWF pink jerseys, gift cards, and much more. Items can be bid on in person or online during the match, with all proceeds benefiting the Pensacola Breast Cancer Association. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive a "Pack It Pink" T-shirt. In addition, there will be a reception from 2-3 p.m. in the Argonaut Athletic Club for breast cancer survivors. Over the past decade, the team has collected more than $50,000 to do its part in the fight against breast cancer.
