PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF volleyball (20-6, 10-0 GSC) stormed back from an early 1-0 deficit to down West Alabama (15-10, 7-2 GSC) 3-1 in the UWF Field House Saturday afternoon. Five Argos finished with double-digit kills to power the winning effort. The contest was the program's 11th annual "Pack It Pink" match. The day featured free T-shirts for the first 250 fans, a silent auction and a pre-match reception in the Argonaut Athletic Club for breast cancer survivors. The event raised $5,068 for the Pensacola Breast Cancer Association.
After a tight, back-and-forth battle, UWF dropped the first set to UWA 28-26. The Argos got out to an early lead in the first set at 9-6 before West Alabama stole the advantage at 14-13. The Argos recorded a total of 19 digs in the first set. Nadine Williams, Jordyn Poppen, and Katy Kuhlmeier finished the first set with three kills each. Poppen hit .429 in the set.
UWF responded well in the second set, cruising to a 25-15 win. Rachel Neblett set the tone early in the set with two kills and a block before the Tigers called a timeout at 5-1. Williams helped then registered two kills and two service aces in getting the Argos a 10-2 lead. UWF maintained the large margin throughout the set. Neblett led the team with a total of five kills. The Argos hit .459 in the second to power the win.
The Argos opened the third with an 8-3 lead before the Tigers once again seized the advantage at 14-13. West Alabama nearly capped the back-and-forth set with a winner, but the Argos stood tall when the visitors built a 24-22 lead. UWF extended the set to ultimately score a 30-28 win. Freshman Caleigh Morrison got the Argos the lead back at 29-28, and Neblett sealed the win with a kill. Morrison led the Argos in the third set with five kills and was followed by Neblett, Kuhlmeier and Poppen, who scored four kills each.
The Argos steamed past the Tigers with a 25-15 win in the fourth set. The Argos started the set with 5-2 run. Poppen got the team rolling with a kill that forced the Tigers to call their second timeout of the set at 9-4. UWF never trailed in the fourth. The Argos went on a 10-3 rally to close the match. UWF posted a .500 hitting percentage in the finale.
Neblett led the team with 14 kills. Poppen registered 13. Williams and Morrison each finished with 12 while Kuhlmeier registered 11 kills for the second straight match. Monique StCyr reset her career-high with 20 digs. She also posted five kills and two service aces. Williams led the team with three service aces. Morrison led the team with four blocks. The Argos finished with seven team blocks. The victory clinched the 13th straight 20-win season for head coach Melissa Wolter.
UWF returns to action Friday at Shorter. First serve in Rome, Ga. is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
