Argos Open Weekend With Sweep At Shorter

Neblett, Poppen combine for 24 kills as UWF moves to 11-0 in GSC play

ROME, Ga. – UWF Volleyball (21-6, 11-0 GSC) earned a 3-0 victory to start the weekend at Shorter Friday evening. Rachel Neblett enjoyed an outstanding evening, posting 14 kills and two service aces while hitting .632. Jordyn Poppen added ten kills, and Monique StCyr registered 39 assists, nine digs and one service ace as the No. 22 Argos powered past the Lady Hawks (13-9, 6-4 GSC). UWF returns to action tomorrow at Lee.

UWF used a big run to win the first. The teams played evenly in the opening part of the set and stood tied at 8-8 before an 11-3 run by the Argos opened a 19-11 lead. Shorter then responded with an impressive run of its own, tightening the score to 21-20 before late kills by Neblett and Poppen helped clinched the set at 25-21. Neblett finished with five kills in the opening stanza. Poppen and Katy Kuhlmeier each finished with three. StCyr posted 13 assists. The Argos outhit Shorter .333 to .143 in the first.

The Argos fell behind 3-0 in the second before igniting a furious 19-8 rally that put the team on top 19-11. The squad would cruise from there to a 25-18 victory. Poppen sealed the set with her fifth kill of the second and ninth of the match. Neblett was again key in the set, posting four kills and a block. Caleigh Morrison had two kills and one block in the stanza. UWF committed just two errors vs. six for Shorter, outhitting the Lady Hawks .361 to .116.

The third set would prove to be the tightest of the match, with ties at 9-9, 15-15, 17-17 and 20-20. UWF ran away with the set late, finishing on a 5-2 run to win 25-22. The Argos outhit Shorter .167 to .071 in the finale. Neblett had five kills, including the match winner, in the final set. Morrison had two kills and one block. Kuhlmeier finished with one block and one kill in the third.

The Argos finished the match with seven total blocks. Kuhlmeier and Morrison paced the team in the category. Each was a part of four blocks. Kuhlmeier ended the match with six kills. Logan Kael led the team with 17 digs to go with a service ace. Nadine Williams chipped in eight digs. UWF hit .281 for the match vs. .108 for Shorter. The sweep was the team's seventh in conference play and 11th overall this year.

UWF returns to action tomorrow at Lee (15-6, 6-3 GSC). Start time is scheduled for 1:00 pm CST.
