PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team will enter the Gulf South Conference Tournament as the 6-seed after dropping a tough contest against Montevallo to end the regular season on Saturday afternoon. UWF (7-7-1) holds a 5-5-1 conference record, which is good for 16 points in league action.
Despite today's loss, the Argonauts will enter on a strong run in their last 10 games. UWF has gone 6-3-1 since September 24, averaging 1.9 goals per game and keeping opponents to just 0.8 goals per game. That includes a particularly potent offense in the last two weeks, when UWF has averaged 2.5 goals per game.
It was a rainy, windy day at the UWF Soccer Complex, and UWF outshot Montevallo 20-11 with 9 shots on goal compared to 5 for the Falcons.
Isaiah Lopez got things going with a tremendous effort on a header off a long cross from
Barrett Mills in the 31st minute. The goal was Lopez's second of the year and Mills earned his second assist of the week.
Cesare Marconi, who ranks fourth in the GSC with eight goals, evened the score for Montevallo with a goal in the 38th minute after hitting a long chip and one-hopping the ball into the net. The final unfortunate break for UWF came late in the second half, as Joshua Keller received a pass from Nicholas Pekel and made a strong run to find the net.
UWF will face Mississippi College in the First Round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Tuesday at 2:30 pm in Clinton, Mississippi.
