UWF Takes Down Auburn Montgomery on Senior Day

Argos to host Christian Brothers in GSC Tournament on Tuesday

PENSACOLA, Fla.Deneisha Blackwood scored two goals on Saturday, leading the University of West Florida women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Auburn Montgomery to wrap up the regular season schedule. The win put the Argonauts at 14-3-1 overall and 11-2-1 in Gulf South Conference play and gave UWF the 3-seed in the upcoming GSC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday.

The team's 14-3-1 record gives UWF 43 points in the overall standings, which leads all GSC teams.

"We had a very tough opponent today in Auburn Montgomery, and they did a great job," head coach Joe Bartlinski said. "I was pleased with our defense to get the shutout, and we'll have a tough opponent again on Tuesday against Christian Brothers."

UWF and Christian Brothers will be joined in the GSC Tournament by 1-seed Lee, 2-seed Mississippi College, North Alabama, Valdosta State, West Alabama and West Georgia. The Argonauts hold a 4-2-1 record against those seven teams in the field this year.

Blackwood provided the offense for UWF on Saturday, scoring the first goal of the day in the 52nd minute, after receiving a pass from deep in the midfield, running it into the box herself and using her left foot to finish off the goal.

Just eight minutes later, Blackwood got a pass from fellow Navarro Junior College transfer Shantell Thompson and skipped it past AUM keeper Morgan Glenn to finish off the 2-0 win.

UWF owned the first half, despite going into halftime with a scoreless tie. The Argonauts outshot AUM 12-2 and worked to record 10 corner kicks.

"We feel good, we're really focused right now," Blackwood said. "We just want to win. We feel very confident now, and we think we're on track."

The program also celebrated Senior Day, honoring seniors Kaljit Atwal, Georgia Bailey and Katelyn Burkhart on Saturday.

"It was great to have the seniors out there," Bartlinski said. "Georgia worked really hard, Kal did a great job on the wing, and Katelyn has been so steady in her four years here. We're proud to have those three out here, and they represent the university well, not only on the field but in the classroom and around town, as well."

Since a minor slipup against Lee on October 7, UWF has won seven consecutive matches. In those seven contests, UWF has outscored its opponents 20-1 and has averaged 3.2 goals per game while posting a 0.20 goals against average. Burkhart has gone 7-0 in net in that time with six shutouts, and Atwal, Blackwood and Leonie Kreil have each had three goals.

UWF will host Christian Brothers at 5 pm on Tuesday, October 31, at the UWF Soccer Complex for the first round of the GSC Tournament on Tuesday. The following rounds of both the men's and women's conference tournaments will be held at the Emory Folmar YMCA Complex in Montgomery, Alabama.
