UWF Scares Off Bucs in GSC Tournament

Argos coast to a 4-1 win in tournament’s opening round

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Tuesday with a 4-1 win over 6-seed Christian Brothers. The Argos used a three-goal first half en route to the victory, which propelled them to a 15-3-1 record for the year.

"Christian Brothers is a great team," UWF head coach Joe Bartlinski said. "They're defensively strong, they work hard, they tackle hard, and I'm pleased to see us put some goals on the board and get some new people on the scoresheet. Isabella (Garcia-Salas) did a fantastic job keeping an eye on her person, and she earned a goal for her effort."

UWF was dominant yet again on Tuesday evening, particularly in the first half. The Argos outshot CBU 15-2 in the opening 45 minutes and had six corner kicks and allowing none from the Bucs.

Garcia-Salas got the scoring going very early on, catching the rebound of a shot from Leonie Kreil that was saved by CBU keeper Riley Chafin. The Guatemala City, Guatemala, native found the ball in the box and converted to give UWF a 1-0 lead just 50 seconds into the match.

"I saw the ball bouncing and knew I had to get to it no matter what," the sophomore said. "Leo took a perfect shot and the keeper made a save, and I just did what coach teaches us and followed up."

The Argonauts would need more than the one goal on Tuesday, however, as Sinead Tierney headed a free kick from Melissa Tammi into the upper 90 in the 20th minute to even the score at 1-1.

Less than two minutes later, Shantell Thompson converted a free kick from just outside the box, hitting a rocket into the upper 90 to make it 2-1. Kreil extended UWF's lead to 3-1 with a left-footer that slid past Chafin just a minute-and-a-half later.

With the 3-1 score at the 23-minute mark, the scoring stopped for 53 more minutes, only picking back up when a collision between Chafin and a CBU defender left open space for Georgia Bailey to score her third goal of the year and cap off a 4-1 win.

UWF will head to Montgomery, Alabama, for the semifinal round of the GSC Tournament, where the team will face 2-seed Mississippi College at 5 pm on Friday.
