COMPLETE AFCA DIVISION II TOP 25 RANKING
WACO, Texas – The UWF football team was ranked No. 2 in the final American Football Coaches Association Division II poll that was announced on Monday.
UWF went 11-4 and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship Game while receiving its first-ever top-25 ranking in just the second season of competition. UWF had twice received vote in the final four weeks of the regular season. The Argonauts won a school record six-consecutive games which included five against nationally ranked teams en route to the title game appearance.Â
Texas A&M Commerce was No. 1 after its 37-27 win over UWF on Saturday. Indiana (Pa.) – who the Argos defeated in the national semifinals – was No. 3 and Wingate – UWF's NCAA first round opponent – was No. 24.Â
Head coach Pete Shinnick's squad had the nation's 20th-ranked defense and was in the top 20 in sacks, turnovers gained, interceptions, fumbles recovered, fourth down defense and defensive touchdowns.
Shinnick was named the AFCA Super Regional 2 Coach of the Year, while Marvin Conley and John Williamson collected Second Team All-America honors.
UWF was one of four teams form the Gulf South Conference to appear in the rankings. West Alabama was No. 12, West Georgia was No. 19 and Delta State was No. 21.
