PENSACOLA, Fla. –
Toni Brewer had 19 points and surpassed 1,000 career points but No. 17 UWF was unable to complete the comeback after forcing overtime, dropping an 80-78 decision to Union at the UWF Field House on Saturday.
UWF (19-5, 14-4 Gulf South) remained in first place in the league standings with four games remaining, but saw its lead shrink to a game over Valdosta State and two over Lee.
Brewer became the 11th player in program history to score 1,000 points and the seventh to do so in their third season. She now has 1,003 points and ranks in ninth place at UWF.
Brewer was one of five players in double figures for the Argonauts.
Alex Coyne had 16 points and eight assists,
Shami Goodman had 13 points,
Katie O'Neal had 12 points and
Katie Bobos finished with 11 points and 17 boards for her 12th double-double.
UWF shot 34 percent and was 5-of-22 from outside. The Argos also were 21-of-33 at the free throw line.
Union (13-11, 8-10) shot 46 percent and made seven 3-pointers. Sara Lytle had 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting to pace the Bulldogs.
UWF led by two after the first quarter and by four at halftime. The teams were tied after three quarters of play.
Union never trailed in the fourth and led by four points on three occasions – the last coming with 3:12 to play. The Argos battled back to a 65-64 deficit and had the ball coming out of a timeout with six seconds to play. A baseline miss by Bobos caromed to Brewer in the paint who was fouled with 0.3 seconds left. She made one of two free throws as UWF outscored the Bulldogs 5-1 down the stretch to force the extra session.
In the overtime, Union again never played from behind and led 77-69 with 35 seconds on the clock. UWF cut the margin to 80-76 with six tics left. After a Union turnover, Coyne was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with 1.2 on the clock. After making the first two, her attempt to miss intentionally was unsuccessful. The Bulldogs got the ball and dribbled out the clock.
The loss was just the second at home for UWF this season and the first in GSC play.
UWF will hit the road next week for a pair of games at North Alabama (17-7, 11-7) and Alabama-Huntsville (5-18, 4-14). Thursday's game against the Lions in Florence, Ala. is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
