UWF used five singles wins for the come-from-behind victory

BOX SCORE

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 7 ranked University of West Florida women's tennis team defeated No. 38 Rollins, 6-3, in its home opener at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on Friday.

UWF improved to 4-0 on the young season, while Rollins moved to 2-3.

The Argos had to come back from a 2-1 deficit to secure their fourth region win in as many matches.

UWF's top doubles tandem of seniors Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos opened the scoring with an 8-5 victory over Rollins' duo of Carlye Goldman and Fabiana Vitanza.

Freshman Jordana Lujan and sophomore Diana Vlad fell to Shannon Etten and Alexandra Borg 8-6 at No. 2. Sophomore Valeria Mantilla and sophomore Heather Mixon were defeated by Savanna Fuller and Teresa Kaiser 8-6 at No. 3 doubles, giving the Tars the 2-1 lead.

In singles play, Lujan knotted the team score at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot. The 41st-ranked Lopez won her second match at the No. 1 position and put the Argos ahead for good with a 7-5, 6-1 victory.

Coyos won her fourth straight match defeating Shannon Etten at No. 2, 6-4, 6-3.

The Argos then closed their scoring with a pair of three 3-set victories from Vlad and Mixon at the Nos. 4 and 5 spots in the lineup. Vlad won her third-consecutive match, while Mixon remained perfect in four duals. Mantilla battled it out and fell short 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 to Teresa Kaiser at No. 6 to close out the competition.

"I thought we started off in doubles a little tense just because we haven't played in front of our home fans yet this year, but in singles I think we really got down to business and focused," UWF head coach Derrick Racine said.

Tennis action continues all weekend long at the Carson Tennis Complex. The No. 9 ranked UWF men's team will face Alabama Huntsville on Saturday at 10 a.m., while the women's team face UAH on Sunday at 10 a.m. Admission is free to all home matches.
