BOX SCORE
PENSACOLA, Fla. – With Christian Brothers defeating North Alabama and securing the No. 4 seed in the Gulf South Conference Tournament, it is likely UWF's three seniors
Jason Laatsch,
Deangelo Legrier and
Austin Somerfield all saw their last action in the UWF Field House as UWF men's basketball players on Saturday night.
But they sure went out in style.
The Argonauts defeated Shorter, 110-103, to end the regular season and post the fourth highest point total in program history. The Argos' 110 points are the most since West Florida set the school record with 126 during the 2003-04 season.
The win also solidifies a 20-win season for the Argos – tying the program record for most wins in a season.
"I'm really happy and excited for our guys to win 20 games," said UWF men's basketball head coach "I'm also happy for our seniors to go out on Senior Day and it was a fun game. It was a fun game to be in and we're just really happy for Deangelo, Jason and Austin."
Legrier, and juniors
Marvin Jones and
Darryl Tucker all posted 20-plus point performances. Jones led the team with 26 points on a 10-of-16 shooting night, while Legrier recorded the game's lone double double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
West Florida shot 59 percent in the first half and had seven different players with at least two field goals in the game's first 20 minutes. UWF had its largest lead of the game at 54-43 with 36 seconds left in the first half.
UWF has shot 55.2 percent during its three-game winning streak – a mark that is higher than any single-game performance before the streak.
UWF never let Shorter get inside of a one-possession for the game's last 11 minutes.
The Argonauts outrebounded Shorter, 38-29, and showed its muscle down low by putting up 44 points in the paint in comparison to Shorter's 22.
Shorter's Phil Taylor, Division II's leading scorer now averaging 34.3 points per game, put up an eye-popping 54 points and went 20-of-21 from the free-throw line. 39 of Taylor's points came in the second half.
UWF travels to Christian Brothers for the No. 4 – No. 5 matchup in the Gulf South Conference tournament on Tuesday in Memphis. It will be UWF's first GSC Tournament appearance since 2013-14.
