PENSACOLA, Fla. –
Shami Goodman scored a career-high 20 points, while
Katie Bobos and
Toni Brewer controlled the glass as 17th-ranked UWF defeated Christian Brothers, 54-45, at the UWF Field House Thursday.
On a night where some of her teammates struggled shooting, Goodman was 8-of-14 and made the team's only two 3-pointers in 27 minutes off the bench.
Bobos had her 11th double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, as Brewer grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds top go along with eight points.
Alex Coyne had nine assists and four steals.
Courtney Meyer was a force on defense with five blocks and nine boards. She has altered 22 shots in the last three games.
UWF (19-4, 14-3 Gulf South) shot 35 percent and used a 50-43 rebounding margin to its advantage.
Samantha Reeves led CBU (12-9, 9-8) with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Rachel Lee added 14.
UWF scored the first four points in the game before CBU countered with a pair of 3-point field goals to grab an 11-10 lead at the quarter break. The Argos scored the final basket of the first quarter and rode that momentum to a 10-0 run for a 18-11 lead. UWF held a 25-22 lead at the half.
The Lady Bucs shot just 26 percent but made six 3-pointers to stay close. The Argos struggled to find a rhythm themselves, missing all nine shots from outside and were just 3-of-9 at the free throw line.
In the third, after the Argos went up by five on a Bobos layup to open the frame, the Lady Bucs used a 9-2 run to grab a 31-29 lead midway through the quarter. The teams traded the lead four times over the remaining 4:30 as CBU led 37-36 entering the fourth.
Reeves made a pair of free throws for CBU with 5:59 to play and give the visitors a 43-41 lead. Those would be their last points for the Lady Bucs until two more Reeves freebies with under a minute to play. During that five-minute stretch, UWF got four points each from Coyne and
Katie O'Neal to regain control and stake a 49-43 advantage.
From there, Goodman answered Reeves aforementioned free throws with two of her own, and Bobos showed some senior toughness in grabbing two rebounds and making three free throws to secure the victory.
