Argos Take 9-3 Decision in Series Finale With UAH

Justin Ambrosino went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead the offense

BOX SCORE

PENSACOLA, Fla.  –  The University of West Florida baseball team needed a strong performance on Sunday after being swept in Saturday's doubleheader against Alabama Huntsville, and thanks to a 12-hit performance, a strong start from Jared Gonzalez, and three hitless innings from the bullpen, the Argonauts salvaged the final game of the series with a 9-3 win over the Chargers.

"Today we played like how we are capable of playing," stated head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "We just need to start doing that consistently. We had a totally different team today than we did yesterday. We had great energy and enthusiasm."

To lead off the second, Trevor Payne reached on an error by UAH second baseman Jay Copeland and the Argonauts were able to capitalize on the miscue with a perfectly executed hit and run by Nic Strasser. That allowed for Ladeavon Matthews to drive home Payne on an RBI single and later in the inning, Robert Lopez brought home Strasser on a groundout to first. Michael Savas capped the second-inning scoring with an RBI single through the left side of the infield to score Matthews.

UAH (10-12, 6-6 GSC) scored its first two runs of the game in the ensuing frame, but the Argos made up for that deficit with a two-run home run by Justin Ambrosino to give the senior his sixth long ball of the season.

The Chargers posted a run in the sixth via a solo home run, but UWF ended the contest with four unanswered runs to build the score to its final 9-3.

In his first start as an Argonaut, Jared Gonzalez pitched six strong innings and allowed two earned runs on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts.

In the seventh, Chase Kiefer posted a sacrifice fly before Ambrosino tallied his third RBI of the day on a RBI single scoring Brandon Harmon.

UWF (11-10, 6-6 GSC) added more insurance an inning later, with Strasser lacing a triple over UAH right fielder Ben Rhodes' outstretched glove to score Matt Sullivan. One batter later, Matthews drove in his second run of the day on a base hit to left-center.

Brian Browning, who has been lights out ever since joining the Argonaut bullpen, continued his late-inning dominance with a hitless seventh and eighth inning.

Since moving to the bullpen, Browning has allowed just one hit over 10 innings pitched and six relief appearances. Opponents are hitting just .032 off him in that span.

Browning's showing was followed by J.A. Harville, who also did not allow any hits in the ninth, but faced a bit of a jam with Charger third baseman Zach Duvall reaching on an error. UAH was able to muster a bases-loaded, one-out situation, but Harville pitched out of it by getting Charger cleanup hitter AJ Walden to pop out to second before sealing it with getting Trey Mathis to ground out to third.

Ambrosino and Strasser each went 3-for-4 to pace the offense. Ambrosino's three RBI led all players in the game, while Ladeavon Matthews went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI. Eight of nine Argonauts in the starting lineup had at least one hit while six of nine posted at least one RBI.

Ambrosino leads all players in the GSC with 29 RBI this year. He is just one RBI shy of his total from all last season.

The Argos head to Daytona Beach for a pair of midweek contests against Embry-Riddle. UWF plays the Eagles on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. ET before wrapping up the two-game set on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. ET.
