Baseball Tops Spring Hill, Extends Win Streak to Seven

Jackson Smith struck out six in five-inning start

BOX SCORE

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida baseball grabbed a 7-5 win at home against Spring Hill on Wednesday evening to extend the team's winning streak to a season-long seven.

The Argos also extend its winning streak against Spring Hill, having won each of its last eight meetings with the Badgers.

"This was a night to get some guys in there that hadn't played in a while," said head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "The game got a little sloppy there towards the end, and I certainly don't like that part of it, but it's never a given when you play these midweeks."

Jackson Smith notched his team-high fifth win of the season after hurling five innings and striking out six. After surrendering a leadoff home run to start the game, Smith settled into his outing nicely, allowing just two hits for the remainder of his outing.

The Argos erased the early 1-0 deficit with a three-run second inning. Colby Brown smacked a two-run triple off the centerfield fence and he was later driven in by Tanner Halstead on a sacrifice fly.

Justin Ambrosino, who showed his muscle in the team's first meeting with Spring Hill with a pair of home runs, hit his seventh home run of the season over the left-centerfield fence to give UWF a 5-1 advantage.

Tanner May recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, using a well-hit single to right to score Nic Strasser.

Walker O'Connor shined in his inning of work, striking out the side and allowing just one hit in the top of the seventh.

The Badgers made things interesting with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but JT Granat finished the game after coming on with two outs by recording a trio of swing and misses by Michael Druhan. Granat was credited with his second save of the season after a three-pitch performance.

Ambrosino and Brown each had a 2-for-4, 2-RBI performance to lead the offense. Ladeavon Matthews and Strasser each had a double to provide UWF with half of its four extra-base hits in the contest.

West Florida looks to continue its winning streak this weekend when it entertains Christian Brothers for a three-game series at Jim Spooner Field beginning Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CT.
