PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team's winning streak extended to 15 games with a 7-0 shutout over Christian Brothers on Monday afternoon. The Argonauts were led by
Becca Taylor in the circle and
Meghan Toney, who went 4-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, in the batter's box.
With the win, West Florida improved to 25-8 on the year and 11-7 in conference play.
Taylor went five scoreless innings, striking out seven and allowing just four hits without issuing a walk, and the performance was enough to get her into the Gulf South Conference record books. After Monday's action, Taylor has thrown 31 consecutive scoreless innings, which is good for 10th all-time in GSC lore.
CBU started the game with a leadoff double from Kylie Steagall. The UWF defense took care of the threat with strikeout and a line drive that
Meghan Toney caught and flipped to
Rhiannon Sassman at second to turn a double play and end the inning.
Jacey Castro countered with a leadoff double of her own to start the bottom half of the first, and Toney lined a single into right center field to give UWF a 1-0 lead early on. Just two batters later,
Callan Taylor lifted a single into center field to bring in Toney and put West Florida ahead 2-0.
West Florida stretched the lead again in the third after Toney scored on an RBI single from freshman
Baleigh Boltz. Toney led off the inning with a single and stole second, before moving to third on a grounder from
Callan Taylor.
Taylor got out of some trouble in the fourth inning after leadoff singles from Steagall and CBU shortstop Amber Johnson, as she struck out Julia Schassburger, forced an infield fly, and got catcher Olivia Parsels to swing and miss at a fastball out of the zone to end the inning.
UWF turned its second double play of the game in the fifth inning, when Taylor forced Lauren Provence to chop a grounder to
Callan Taylor at third. Taylor made the throw to Toney, who made the turn and completed the play with a throw to Castro at first.
Toney's third hit of the day came in the fifth, with a one-out single up the middle. She advanced to third with a double into the left-center field gap from Sassman, and
Callan Taylor's sacrifice fly brought in Toney and gave UWF the 4-0 lead.
The Argonauts kept the scoring going in the sixth, starting with a double from
Caitlin Steel into the left-center field gap that scored
Rachel Wright.
Kara Wilson followed with her second career RBI, which came on a single through the right side, and Toney singled up the middle to score Wilson and put the score at the final 7-0.
Freshman
Taylor Rolison entered the game in the sixth and threw two perfect innings to close out the win. She got four popouts and two groundouts and 14 of her 20 pitches were strikes.
West Florida will head to Montevallo, Alabama, for a doubleheader against Montevallo on Thursday, March 30.
