Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of West Florida picked up its 16th consecutive win with an 8-1 victory at Montevallo on Thursday afternoon. The Argonauts stand at 26-8 on the year, after Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to rain.
Becca Taylor started in the circle and earned her 15th win of the season, going five innings and striking out six batters with no walks. While she gave up a run in the bottom of the first, Taylor's scoreless innings streak reached 31.1 innings, which is the 10th-longest in Gulf South Conference history.
Taylor made easy work of the Falcons after allowing that run and retired 12 of the final 13 batters she saw over her last four innings. She has allowed just three earned runs in her last seven starts, which equals out to 41 innings, a 7-0 record, 34 strikeouts and just 2 walks.
Montevallo started the scoring in the bottom of the first, with a double from Celestia Davila, a single from catcher Lady Sarah Federico, and a fielder's choice from 2016 NFCA first team All-American Kelsey Vining to put up the Falcons 1-0.
UWF evened it back up in the third on a bunt from
Jacey Castro.
Caitlin Steel led off the inning with a single up the middle, and
Sara Spears drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs, when Castro dropped a bunt and a wild throw allowed Steel to take the extra base and put the score at 1-1. Just two pitches later, Spears scored on a wild pitch, moving Castro to third.
Rhiannon Sassman made it 3-1 on her team-high 43rd hit of the season to cap off the three-run third inning, with a single up the middle that scored Castro.
The Argonauts added to the lead in the fourth with another run. Steel led off with a grounder to third base and advanced to second base on an error. Spears dropped down a bunt single and stole second base, but Federico made an errant throw to third on the play that allowed Steel to come across and put the score at 4-1.
Callan Taylor brought in two runs in the sixth and stretched the UWF lead to 6-1. Her single into the left center field gap came after consecutive one-out singles from Castro, Toney and Sassman. Taylor has been one of UWF's best hitters during UWF's 16-game winning streak, hitting .370 with 10 RBI and a team-high 8 walks.
Becca Taylor's day was finished after the fifth, and
Taylor Rolison made her 16th appearance of the season. It was a bit of a rocky start for the freshman, with the first two batters she faced reaching via walk and a single, but Rolison quickly settled in and blew through the Falcons lineup.
She forced a 4-3 double play and struck out Holly LaForce to end the sixth, and allowed just one hit in the seventh to wrap things up. With her two scoreless innings, Rolison's season ERA dropped to 3.00 and her opponent batting average now stands at .220.
UWF put the lead at 8-1 with an RBI double from
Jacey Castro and a sacrifice fly from Sassman in the seventh inning. The double was Castro's 10th, which leads the team this year.
West Florida will now head to Jackson, Tennessee, for a weekend series against Union. The doubleheader on Saturday will begin at 1 pm, as will the series finale on Sunday.
