BOX SCORE
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida baseball team fell victim to three Spring Hill home runs in an 11-5 setback at Jim Spooner Field on Tuesday night.
The loss is UWF's first to Spring Hill since Feb. 11, 2015, snapping an eight-game winning streak when playing their counterparts from Mobile.
"They swung the bats and we couldn't hold them at bay," said head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "We had trouble locating pitches, we gave up the long ball, and we just didn't come out with the same type of energy and fight we had this past weekend."
West Florida (23-15) gained a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second, using a four-hit showing and RBIs from
Tanner Halstead,
Robert Lopez and
Tanner May to overcome an early 1-0 deficit.
Spring Hill (22-17) posted a three-run third inning and had a Brennan Fontenot two-run homer in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. The Argos chipped away at that lead with
Casey Crawford hitting a pinch-hit triple and then crossing the plate on a
Brandon Harmon sacrifice fly in the fourth.
The Badgers used a solo home run by Ulysses Fluellen in the fifth and a two-run blast by Brandon Harigel in the eighth to distance themselves from the Argonauts later in the ballgame.
West Florida posted 11 hits in the contest including a 3-for-5 showing from
Nick Kerkmann in the cleanup spot.
Ladeavon Matthews went 2-for-4 and
Tanner Halstead had a 2-for-5 night as the 4-6 hitters in the Argonauts combined to go 7-for-14 in the contest.
West Florida awaits an important three-game home set against first place standing Delta State beginning Friday at 2:00 p.m.
