MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The sixth-ranked and top-seeded UWF women's tennis team opened defense of its Gulf South Conference Tournament title with a very efficient 5-0 win over Delta State at the Lagoon Park Tennis Complex on Thursday morning.

UWF improved to 21-6 overall and advances to the tourney semifinals on Friday at 9:00 a.m. against North Alabama. DSU ended its season with a 5-16 record.

The Argos scored early and often in doubles play, cruising to three wins with a pair of 8-0 victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions from the teams of
Jordana Lujan and
Heather Mixon, and
Diana Vlad and
Valeria Mantilla. UWF kept the momentum rolling at the top spot when
Paula Lopez and
Paula Coyos claimed an 8-1 victory.

Needing just two wins in singles to clinch the match, Mixon and Mantilla breezed to wins at the Nos. 5 and 6 spots, respectively. Mixon improved to 22-3 with a 6-1, 6-0 decision and Mantilla didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory – her 17th in duals.

UWF has now won 79-consecutive matches against GSC opponents dating back to the 2011 season.
