Poppen's Career Day Propels UWF To Eighth Straight Win

Sophomore racks up career-high 19 kills as UWF cruises past Alabama Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – UWF won its eighth straight match and stayed perfect in GSC play with a 3-0 road win over Alabama Huntsville (11-5, 2-1 GSC) Saturday. The Argos (11-4, 3-0 GSC) got a career day from Jordyn Poppen, who piled up 19 kills while hitting .455 for the match. The team has now won 9 of its first 10 sets in conference play.

UWF never trailed in the opening set, building a 9-4 lead out of the gate. Rachel Neblett, Nadine Williams and Poppen all picked up two early kills to build the lead to five. Regrouping after a timeout, UAH narrowed the lead to 16-14 before kills by Neblett and StCyr plus a Chargers attack error took the lead back to 5 at 19-14. UWF would close the set on a 9-1 run to win 25-15. Poppen led the way in the first with 8 kills, and Monique StCyr added 15 assists.

Poppen once again starred in the second set, piling up seven kills to help the Argos win 25-18. The team never trailed by more than one in the set and used a 10-1 run midway through to turn a 7-6 lead into a 17-7 lead. UWF closed on a 4-1 run that culminated with a flurry of kills by Neblett and Poppen to go up 2-0.

UAH refused to go quietly in the third, jumping out to a 4-1 lead that would prove to be its largest of the match. Taylor Hall picked up two kills to help UWF build a 12-7 lead before a UAH surge tied the set at 16-16. Caleigh Morrison then reclaimed the lead for the Argos with a kill and a combined block with Hall to make it 18-16. Poppen's 18th kill of the match made it 19-16 and forced a Chargers timeout. The Argos cruised the rest of the way, completing another 9-1 run to win 25-17.

Poppen finished with a career-high 19 kills and added 4 digs while hitting .455. StCyr hit .333 and finished with 40 assists plus 4 aces. Neblett and Morrison each racked up 8 kills and 4 total blocks. Sarah Hayman led the team with 11 digs. The Argos hit .324 as a team, a season-high in GSC play, and piled up 8 total blocks. The victory was the Argos' 24th consecutive vs. Alabama Huntsville.

The Argos enjoy a week off before returning to action Saturday, September 30th vs. Auburn Montgomery at the UWF Field House. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
