PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 5-ranked University of West Florida women's soccer team got back on track on Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 win over Delta State in Pensacola. With the win, UWF improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Gulf South Conference.
One of the most notable events in the match came from junior transfer
Grace Busby. Busby started the game in goal for the Argonauts and earned a win as the keeper after playing a flawless first 45 minutes in the net. She moved to the midfield in the second half and scored a goal in the 50th minute, making her the first Argonaut to record a win and a goal scored in the same game since 1996, and possibly the first women's soccer student-athlete to do so in program history.
The Argonauts were clicking on all cylinders on Sunday, with 23 shots, 13 shots on goal, 10 corner kicks, a goal from 5 different players and only one shot allowed from the Lady Statesmen, who dropped to 1-7. In fact, the only shot UWF allowed in the contest came in the 80th minute, and it was on a free kick after the Argos were called for a foul from roughly 25 yards out.
It did not take long for UWF to get the scoring started, with a one-touch pass in the 11th minute from
Savanna Soares finding
Deneisha Blackwood, which the junior converted into her team-high fifth goal of the year. That goals total for Blackwood ranks second in the GSC this year, and her 11 points are the third-most in the conference.
Soares picked up a goal of her own in the 31st minute, drilling a header into the back post side netting on a corner kick from
Kaljit Atwal that put UWF ahead 2-0. It was Soares' third goal of the year and Atwal's second helper.
After taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, UWF made a change in goal and brought Busby out to the midfield. In addition to Busby's interesting day, the goal and the keeper win made her the first Argonaut to score a point and get a keeper win since Sarah Story did so in 2012.
Just 12 minutes later,
Shantell Thompson made it a 4-0 lead when she dribbled through four Lady Statesmen defenders and used her left foot to slip a shot by the keeper, marking her second goal of the year.
The final goal of the day came from
Georgia Bailey, when she took a shot from nearly 40 yards out with no defenders around her and found the upper 90 for her first goal of the year.
UWF ended the day with 10 corner kicks to DSU's 1, and 13 shots on goal to Delta State's 0.
West Florida will face No. 2 Columbus State on Thursday, September 28, in Columbus, Georgia, before hosting Valdosta State on Sunday, October 1 for Military Appreciation Day.
