PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Florida men's soccer took on NAIA opponent Mobile at home on Thursday evening. UWF was the better team over 90 minutes shutting out No. 8 Mobile.
Gavin Gillies, a senior from Perth, Australia, came on in the 12th minute. Gillies would muscle his way past the Mobile defense to set up Ed Chappe, who volleyed home the first goal of the night and Chappe's first goal of the season.
Andrew Wentz would send a perfect ball over the top of the Mobile defense in the 40th minute to find Gillies who settled and finished from 13 yards to put UWF at 2-0 over Mobile.
The UWF defense recorded their first shutout of the season against Mobile. Defenders David Born and Owen Munro breaking up the Mobile offense over and over in the second half as Mobile attempted to put a goal on the board. The UWF defense didn't let any Mobile shots hit the target, all nine Mobile strikes missing the target.
Frustration mounted for Mobile in the second half, and three yellow cards were shown to Paul Ledsham, Nathaniel Bedal, and Guilherme Altoa of Mobile.
UWF moves to an overall record of 3-4, giving Mobile just their second loss of the season.
The Argonauts will be back in action on Sunday away against Saint Leo at 1:00pm.
