HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –
Halee Nieman had 20 points and the UWF offense proved too much for Alabama Huntsville as the Argos claimed a 66-64 win at Spragins Hall on Saturday.
Nieman, who had not practiced since sustaining an injury on Sunday night against AUM, made a living at the free throw line, going 13-for-14 as she scored 13 points and recorded six of her eight rebounds after halftime.
Shami Goodman made some big baskets and penetrated into the middle of the floor well, finishing with 13 points, including a big 3-pointer and jumper in the fourth quarter that helped the Argos maintain their lead.
UWF (13-7, 8-5 Gulf South) shot 33 percent but really attacked the UAH defenders as the game evolved and wore down the Chargers. The Argonauts used 12 offensive rebounds to score 12 second-chance points and ended with 20 points off 17 UAH turnovers.
"Those (offensive rebounding and points off turnovers) were two elements that have been hit or miss for us throughout the year," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We were chasing them around early and we then ran the legs out of them in the second half. This is a tough road trip so going 1-1 isn't necessarily a bad thing."
The Argos were nearly perfect at the foul line, making 20-of-21 freebies.
UWF fell behind 32-17 midway through the second quarter as UAH made five 3-pointers in the opening nine minutes to build the lead. But the Argonauts closed the half on a 14-3 run to pull within 35-31 at the break.
UAH used a 9-4 run to stretch the lead to 44-35 early in the third. From there, the Argos controlled the game and used their legs to run down the Chargers.
Imani Mulmore, who had 11 points off the bench, capped a 12-2 run with a wild layup to beat the third quarter buzzer, giving UWF it's first lead of the game, 47-46. Goodman opened the fourth with her triple to make it a 15-2 run.
The Argos extended the lead to six twice in the final minute before the Chargers made it close with a late 3-pointer from Loren Foster. She made five long balls on her way to a game-high 21 points to lead the home squad.
UAH (11-9, 5-8) shot 39 percent in the game, but was held to 32 percent over the final 25 minutes. That was the period where the Argos outscored the Chargers, 49-32.
The win was the third in the last four years for UWF at Spragins Hall.
UWF will return home for a pair of games this week, starting Thursday night against Lee (17-4, 10-3). Tip-off for Military Appreciation Night at the UWF Field House is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. as the front end of a doubleheader with the men's programs.
