Late Surge Sends UWF Men's Soccer Past Mississippi College

Chappe records a goal and an assist as the Argos improve to eight wins in GSC play

CLINTON, Miss. – UWF men's soccer staged an impressive comeback in the final 12 minutes of regulation at Mississippi College Thursday. The Argos erased a single-goal deficit that stood for most of the game with goals from Teague Coleman and Ed Chappe in the final minutes to complete a 2-1 comeback win.

The Argos fell behind out of the gate when Joshua Robinson set up Victor Bazan for an early goal in the 11th minute to put the Choctaws on top 1-0. The home team took the lead all the way to the halftime break. Mississippi College outshot the Argos 6-4 in the first. Each team mustered just one shot on frame. The goal was the fourth of the season for Bazan.

The Choctaws (6-6-5, 4-5-0 GSC) remained up 1-0 until the game's 79th minute, when Coleman put home his first goal of the season off a feed from Chappe. The assist was Chappe's sixth of the season. He has now recorded an assist in three straight matches and four of the last five.

Chappe put the Argos ahead for the first time in the game less than three minutes after setting up Coleman. He converted a penalty try that made it 2-1 with just under eight minutes left in the game. The goal was his ninth of the year.

The Argos outshot the Choctaws 9-6 in the second half and 13-12 in the game. Jacob Murray picked up the win by recording five saves, all after allowing the early goal. The well-contested match featured 21 fouls and six yellow cards.

UWF (10-3-2, 8-1-0 GSC) will wrap the regular season Saturday. Kickoff at Delta State (3-11-2, 1-8-1 GSC) is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Argos have clinched a first round bye in the GSC Tournament and will compete in the semifinals Nov. 2 at Auburn Montgomery.
